I had a new steering wheel put on (the leather was torn) at about 18000 miles on my 2019 Ram classic.
Shortly after that cruise control went off driving up i-75 and an alarm "electronic break controller needs service" flashed on the info panel.
I took it to the local dealer and they said it needed an alignment. They "said" the steering column sensor was off 13 degrees. I got the before and after specs of the alignment and it looked OK to me -- in range.
After the alignment the Ram had a pull to the right and the steering will was not straight. I took it to a different dealer and they said the alignment was way off and did a second alignment. It still has a slight pull to the right. The service rep at the second dealer blamed the pull on the crown of the road but I don't believe it. If I drive down the wrong side of the road (out in the country on a long straight) it still wants to drift to the right.
How hard is it to align these Rams? Could an alignment screw up the steering wheel sensor if the wheel itself was held steady? I'm thinking about going to a third party to have them check alignment.
Where is this steering wheel sensor? How can you tell if it is aligned properly with the wheels?
On more question. Sometimes backing up or pulling forward I'd like to open the door to see just how close I am to a curb or a ramp. When I open my door the truck comes out of gear. Is this normal? Any way to override it?
