@rpr to be fair I'm sure you are serious about your audio. But you if talk to the masses they will be happy with the 8.4. Its all about cost vs reward right, if sound is that important to you that you have spent and done all that then you are NOT the norm! You will pay 3k for a head unit no question most wont.

Alpine X009 in a 2015 Ram 5500

I had the X009 installed in my 2015 Ram 5500 back in September. I know this picture is not the best as it was dark outside. I will try to take a better one in the next day or two. The radio shop customized the top buttons as I did not like the large square ones. In a way, I regret getting this navigation for the following reasons:
1) I pull a large enclosed gooseneck trailer and by law I have to follow "truck routes". As of right now, this navigation does not have this feature. Alpine claims they will have an update soon. In the meantime, I had to spend an additional $400 to get another navigation system (Rand McNally) that will route me through truck routes.
2) I am unable to change the settings for the trailer brakes. Apparently, these are normally controlled from your factory radio. I now cannot change it so it is set as "light trailer - electric brakes" when I need "Heavy trailer - hydraulic over electric".

Bringing this back up because myself and at least one other are interested in this unit for replacing the 8.4. I suppose what I need to figure out is:

1. Maestro has released the CHR03 unit which now covers 8.4 replacement.

2. Alpine has their own head unit, the X009, which I assume uses the above unit, or something very similar, to perform the vehicle interfacing duties.

As I understand, everything works with the exception of the HVAC position controls. I believe those statements were made before the release of the CHR03 product(?) So what I now need to figure out is; have the HVAC specific CAN commands been integrated into the Maestro since? If so, do any of the aftermarket offerings (Alpine/Kenwood) provide the radio GUI's to even perform such functions?

In looking through the latest CHR03 manual, it reads:

"To access the Maestro menu, press and hold the Favorites button for 3 seconds. Press on Climate to display information about the climate controls. Depending on the OEM climate system, the status of the climate controls is able to be shown or controlled in some vehicles."

Rather vague regarding the position stuff, but the GUI shown in the manual does seem depict different positional options for the HVAC.. I'm just not sure if this is a generic photo. I guess I'll email them and see, unless someone here has purchased the unit and knows for sure.

I got this response from ADS:

"The X009-RAM is not compatible with that trim, as you have already stated. Your assumptions are correct; those that have used this radio despite its incompatibility have lost the ability to control vent position.

You should be able to use the X009-U, X008-U, or INE-W957 without any problems, though, as the firmware is different than the X009-RAM."

I think I'm going to take the plunge.. Will let everyone know of the results.

I joined this site just to see the outcome of you putting in the alpine x009. I am thinking about the same thing since I'm wanting to do the install myself and adding a dsp seems to be above my pay grade with the new dodge 8.4 hu. But for the money I save by doing the install myself would help offset the cost of the alpine x009. Plus I would get a much wanted cd, DVD player.
How did the install work out for you. I notice on all the sites it says the alpine x009 does not work with our trucks with the 8.4 hu. Were you able to get it to work for you? Was there anything that didn't work that you had to overcome?
Thanks you your help.

For anyone interested, I'm thinking you could reverse engineer (literally) the custom harness I and others are using to convert from the uconnect 5.0 to the 8.4. Instead of the 8.4 Bezel you now have, you would use the 5.0 bezel to retain HVAC controls.

You could probably find several members willing to sell you their 5.0 bezel w/integrated HVAC controls pretty cheap.

Check out the 4th Gen DIY section for the pinout of the harness you need to reverse to "downgrade" your radio. Then this super expensive radio should work for you without problems (I think)...

And a bunch of us would buy up your 8.4 RA4 radios which would offset the costs.

I didn't want to speak for you. I would imagine it would cost more since the demand for this radio isn't as great due to price.

Would be the same price, just reversing all the wiring.

I confirmed with idatalink that their software is now updated so you do not lose any of the stock controls, HVAC or otherwise. I've ordered the CHR03 an Maestro as well as the Alpine X009-U and will be modifying my factory 8.4 Laramie dash trim panel to fit.

Let us know how it goes and post back with a parts list of the needed items to help others out that are considering it.

I may be missing something but that truck says it has a 5.0 radio.

Yeah from factory. But if you look at the pictures it looks like the dealership upgraded the headunut to the alpine one.

Yep, my bad. If I could have lumped this in to my purchase deal, I may have considered this an option. Nice catch, it may be something for folks to ask about, especially those that can't have factory 8.4s in their chosen trim level.

Yeah same here when I bought my express before upgrading trucks.
I would love having that headunit. I just wonder how much they upped their price because of it.
It also looks like they have upgraded seats? They look like half leather
