Anyone use 5W30 instead?

I've read here and there that 5W20 is just too thin, that they only use it to maximize MPG, and that 5W30 protects better.

Might just be internet lore, but I was curious.

A lot of guys use 5w30. Or a mix of 5w30 and 10w30. Even some using 0w30 I believe. Synthetic thread on here has a lot of info on the topic

Isn't 5w30 mean a range of 5 hot to 30 cold? If so the difference is cold temps.

Your hemi or pentastar powered Ram won't know the difference between the two oils. Like said, 20wts are recommended to squeeze every once of fuel economy out of a vehicle. Not enough to notice for an individual truck.

Most of your 5w30's will shear down to a 20wt after some useage, where a 20wt actually tends to stay more shear stable.

Even so, I feel better running synthetic 5w30 in my pentastar powered Ram. Usually Supertech or Napa. Huge spender I am.

The first number is winter rating, the second number is weight, the weights are srandard cSt or operating temps.

Engine-Oil-Viscosity-Chart.png

Weight of oil is thickness at 100C, see below. If a 20 weight flows over 9.3 operating viscosity temps it becomes a 30 weight and so on.

9.3 <12.5

Thanks guys. I read through the monster synthetic oil thread sometimes, but it's huge.

FWIW I get 20mpg on the highway while running Redline 5w30 and Bilsteins at 2.8. If I ran 5w20 instead, I *MIGHT* get 20.1mpg. Not worth it for the loss of film strength you will lose from a 20wt oil IMO.

That chart that Burla posted is a really good example of the Range for oil protection. Those 0w40’s are the best oils imo; just look at the range of protection. And the 0w40’s sheer down into a Very Healthy 30w oil with the added bonus of a Beefed up additive package.

Can anyone help recommend a weight for me? '17 Lone Star crew cab 24k miles with 5.7. Been using 5w-20 Valvoline Synthetic Blend. Change oil every 3-4k miles, I never go over 4k miles, so oil change every 2-3 months. Have Hemifever tune with MDS turned off. The only issue or concern I may have is that I live in South Texas. We don't really get winter here, but the summers are brutal. Got in my truck to leave at 515pm today and temp inside was reading 113 degrees with darkest legal tint all the way around and an eyebrow on the windshield. Temps here have been 95-100 for weeks with heat indexes at 115+. I do have a 180 tstat installed, oil temp rarely goes over 200, maybe 205-210 if I'm really getting on it for awhile.

You really need a 30wt oil given your climate. The thing to remember is a 20wt oil is only a 20wt at 210*. If your oil temp goes over 210 your oil is thiner than a 20wt. Last summer my oil temp got up to 255* while towing my camper. Thankfully I have a 30wt oil that might have been in the high 20wt at that temp. A 20wt oil at 255 is probably 10wt or less. Not good.

Personally I would switch to Quaker State Ultimate Durability (QSUD) 5w30 if you're looking for an off the shelf oil. Still carries the MS6395 spec for warranty, has a good amount of moly, and you will get the extra protection of a 30wt you need for your climate.

Thank you! Honestly don't change the oil myself. I work 60+ hours a week and really don't like crawling under my truck on my one day off in 100+ degree weather lol. We have a Valvoline Express in town open 7 days a week, I can drive in and have oil change in 15 minutes without getting out of my truck on a Sunday. Come to think of it, I do have an NTB and Firestone in town, I do believe they are open on Sundays. Will check them out and see what oil options they offer. As far as warranty, that's probably out the window for me with the hemifever tune. Thank you for the info!

So I checked and NTB uses Valvoline. Firestone uses Quaker State Advanced Durability, Penzoil, and Penzoil Platinum. Guess I have to pick my poison or start doing it myself lol. Thanks again for your help.

No problem!

I hear you, changing oil in 100 heat sucks lol. If you've been happy at Valvoline, I'd keep going there. Just ask them to put 5w30 in[emoji106]
