I know...newbie asking questions...sorry.

Am in the market for a truck and of course went looking at F150s and Dodge RAM 1500s. Have been a Ford guy on my last cars, but reviews and friends convinced me to take a good look at Dodge.

Test drove both the new 2015 F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 2.7 ecoboost and a 2014 Ram Sport 4x2. Don't really need a 4x4 but that was the first 2.7 ecoboost to arrive. Ecoboost would most likely need to be ordered and not as good a deal.

MSRP on Ram was 49k with all the features you could want minus the tow brake and class IV tow package. Dealer is offering to install those items and drop price down to 37K net (includes tax, title, etc).

Have another dealer also with a 2014 4x4 Sport that the owner has used for his personal vehicle with 29k miles on it (he drives it 110 miles to work and back home which racked it up). 52,795 MSRP and is offering it at 34.5K. Second one does not have 3.92 gears like first one but not sure how much those are needed.

Since I do not need the 4x4 and it has so many more miles am leaning towards the first deal, but could always get an extended warranty and have the 4x4 in my pocket in case I ever do need it. Uploaded windows sticker on this one. First one is pretty much same but 4x2 and 1K miles roughly.

So, are these good deals, great deals, average easy deals?

Any help is appreciated.

30K on a 2014. That's crazy high.. Looking at KBB it seems like a good but just my personal opinion I would not want to buy something that new with that many miles.

Hell 20,000 more miles and you will have more than me and mines a 09..lol

I don't know if you plan on towing anything but if you are towing anything heavy get the 4x4. You never know when you'll need the extra grip. Also, 4X2 doesn't resell as fast as a 4x4 and you can always drive a 4x4 in 2 wheel drive.

As far as price goes, I'd much rather pay $2,500 more for no miles. You can always add a tow brake and receiver. When I had my 1500 I bought my tow brake online, installed it in literally 5 minutes and took it to the dealer to have it flashed into the computer.

Do either of the Rams fit your needs, wants?

$49K sticker for a 2WD, must be a loaded model. $37k, including TTL, is probably not too bad a deal.

The used truck would not be too bad a deal either, if it wasn't for the high miles.

I don't know about SC, but most states calculate sales tax before MFG rebates are applied. Keep this in mind when you look at the bottom line.

I bought a 2014 4x4 CC Big Horn 5.7 8-speed (+ a few other options), stickered at $44k, got it for $31k +TTL. After TTL the price was a little over $34k.

The pRice on the new doesn't sound right to me. 12k off and taxes paid.

The first one is also a demo truck loaded similarly to the second but with a lot less miles thus could be sold as new. Second truck would need to be sold as used.

Tax title and fees here in SC is basically $729.00.

Was thinking if the second one that is used through in an extended warranty it might be a good deal but not sure they will do that. NADA on it is around the 40K mark.

Thanks for the replies!

Hi Timeless,

The big question is what do you want to do with the truck. If you want something for trails and logging power line roads 4X4 is definitely a plus. IF you want a fast street truck then the 4X2 is the way to go. The best deal in the world is useless if it doesn't fit what you want to do with it.
In either case get what best fits what you want and enjoy.

My main goal is basically towing a vehicle to the track for road racing and general household crap. I can't think of a reason I would ever need 4x4 where I live since in climate weather shuts the whole city down anyways.

Edit: added some photos of the first truck that has MSRP of 49K. This demo truck has 4K miles on it currently.

Resale is better on 4X4 but up front is more of course too. Where I live it is easy choice it may not be for you.

The term demo truck scares me a bit as that means test drivers may have been fairly hard on it.

You can test drive any vehicle you want at a dealership.

In these two cases they seem to be driven by employees.

The first one by their Finance guy and the second one with the most miles by one of the owners that commutes 110 miles per day to work.

So I am pretty much decided on the 4x4 sport with 29k miles. The dealer offered to meet me half way on his cost for a 5 year /100k max care warranty.

Before I pull trigger anyone have any things I might wanna make sure of?

Thanks!

If your going to use it for towing then I would not go for the Eco boost your gas mileage will go to hell & the mpg on the Eco boost isn't as ford advertises not even close. I speak from experience I used to own one sadly I wish I never left the ram family but ultimately I'm glad I came back

timeless, i would also go with the higher mileage 4x4. i would try and get him to meet you have way on on a life time bumper to bumper warranty. make sure it is a CHRYSLER warranty. can be had from dealers for 2400.00. 1/2 way would be around 1200.00. dont let them roll it into truck loan as it can be paid via interest free payments. use google and learn about this. good luck.

Lifetime max care is actually $ 3900 dealer cost.

Those prices seem high to me. I got my truck used in 2013 with 8300k on it and payed 25k out the door. It's an express base model with no bells and whistles but the low payments are nice.
