I am looking at purchasing a 2002 Quad Ram 4x4 with the 5.9 and auto trans from a used car dealership. It's completely rust free and only has 106K miles on the original drivetrain.
I took it out for a test drive and took it through the paces (not beat on it...just worked it as a truck should). From a dead stop on hard acceleration (not enough to turn the tires over), it hit approx. 5100 rpm and began jerking hard. It wouldn't shift into 2nd gear at all. I did the same hard acceleration from around 20 mph with the same results. Baby it and it shifted fine. My first thought was a shift solenoid going bad. They said they would get it fixed at their cost since I had come so far (drove 4 hours there and then have been waiting for them to fix it).
I get a call back today saying it was the shift cable that needed to be adjusted and that it could have happened if the floor mat was under the gas pedal (mentioned the governor forcing the shift to remain at the 5100 range).
I have my doubts, hence why I am posting it here for further information...hopefully someone who knows if it is BS or not. The dealership has an A+ rating through the BBB and tons of positive reviews so I am torn as to if I believe them or not. I'm a classic car guy and don't know enough of the newer technology to be able to know if they are being honest or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
