S&B. K&N does not have a very good airbox design, so it pulls in a lot of engine heat. The box is not sealed either, so it is the loudest of the aftermarket intakes available.

If have a stock ECM computer you won't see a performance difference because the computer will adjust the call for air in presence of higher flow filter. The main benefit is looks and modified sound. You can remove the entire air box and go unfiltered and the computer will adjust. If you mod the ECM that calls for more air, you may see benefit, but only if calling for signs antsy more air. This is because the stock box and filter is sized to allow enough air flow to meet performance specs at its dirtiest condition.

This has been posted numerous times on the forums over the years, but have you ever tested this at a dragstrip or dyno yourself. We have tested 4 intakes on a stock truck with no tuning and have seen up to a .4 drop in 1/4 mile ET from just an intake alone....all intakes were run on the same truck on the same night to make the test as accurate as possible. Intakes do work, especially when temps are cooler and you are actually bringing in more cold air. Having a tuner will always help, but it is not necessary to see gains from basic performance mods like an intake, throttle body, or headers.

I always smile at these debates. I totally agree with Matt's comments, because they are proven. Yes today's stock intakes work much better than years ago, but auto manufacturers design comfort (read sound levels) into the intakes as well. Aftermarket skips this for solely performance goals.
When you see the top tuner shops in the country running non stock intakes on their own, and shop cars, it must mean something. All the big tuner shops want bragging rights to the fastest in the country, they do any mod needed to get there. If factory intakes worked better than stock you'dd see them left on.

I don't think he was saying the stock intake is better than aftermarket, but that the stock computer will negate any extra airflow brought in from a better performing intake. It is true to an extent depending on how you drive. If you drive like a grandpa everyday, then your computer will adjust to that until you reset your computer. This is why intake and exhaust manufacturers tell you to reset the computer after each mod. This cleans the slate so that your computer immediately recognized the increased airflow and actually allows you to make use of it. The harder you drive your truck, the more responsive it will be to aftermarket parts. The numbers at the track and dyno do show gains on these parts both with and without a tuner though, so you will never catch me driving a vehicle with a stock intake.

Good point didn't run 0-60 but I did run a dyno on a Mercedes E500 (v8 5.0L) and a Infiniti G35 some years ago. No difference in HP. I believe the infinity showed 2hp above 4000 rpm but that's not everyday usable RPMs. I had stock ECM computers. If I had a tuner that called for more air, the engine may have made use of the freer flowing filter. I've since sold those cars so didn't invest anymore in mods. The sound was nice with the K&N on those cars, just no difference in Hp or MPG. Perhaps I'm an outlier, but recent discussions with my neighbors who are Diesel engine engineers said they were not surprised by my results. That's how I learned about design requirements for stock filters and intakes. Just sharing my experiences.
