Bought a 2016 Ram 1500 new. Every year I have had to replace the camera. Last time was July 2021. It quit working yesterday.
Dealer will be installing 6th camera Monday. Is anyone else having this problem???? Has dealer offered any permanent solution???
My head is about to explode over this problem. Otherwise I have been satisfied with the vehicle.

WOW I had my camera installed by the dealer in 2016. Never a issue ! My guess is a short, may be caused by rubbing, They should notice that when they remove the harness !
Or possible bad ground,Rusted connectors. They should also add a tiny dab of Dielectric grease to the socket when they reinstall the new camera. But they need to get a good trouble shooter on it ! Good :luck and Please update what they find !
Hopefully a gear head will chime it here

What are the symptoms when the camera is not working? Quite a few people including myself have had backup camera issues but can typically be resolved by looking at a few of the connection points and ensuring no damage. I believe there are two connections under the truck bed and one in the tailgate behind the liner.

Considering the dealership has replaced the camera that many times and messed with the connection in the tailgate I'd venture to guess it's in one of the connections under the bed.

Follow the wire harness coming out of the tailgate and you will see them. I would try unplugging and inspecting them then reconnecting.

Thanks for your responses. I think it is a short or a connector problem and I am definitely not mechanically inclined. Sometimes the camera goes out and an hour later it will work just fine. Later that day it goes out again and stays out. Sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes green. Other times it has various colored squiggly lines. Each time the dealership tells me they checked for shorts and connections. I think that is bovine excrement. I am going to speak to someone in management this time. I just cannot believe all those cameras are bad.

I agree. Sounds like the typical symptoms associated with the short/connection/grounding issue others have had. Dealer needs to dig into it further for you if you are taking it in.

Took truck in yesterday and spoke with the service manager who is also part owner. Said he had spoke to Chrysler and was given a warranty procedure to follow and it could take several days to complete. WHAT??? Received a phone call yesterday
about 6pm that truck was ready for pick up. WHAT??? When I picked up truck this morning I was told the camera and wiring harness had been replaced. As I reviewed my paperwork it didn't say anything about wiring harness. Seems the camera comes as an "assembly" which now includes a new wiring harness. So we will see how long this one last. Stay tuned for the next chapter of this soap opera.

The OEM camera is attached to the tailgate handle
The are 2 wiring pigtails that run from the tailgate handle down through the tailgate
At the bottom of the tailgate there is a black plastic piece that both pigtails pass through
Hidden behind the license plate you will notice a connector, there may be 2 connectors.
These connectors are where you would disconnect the wiring if you want to remove the tailgate.

From that connection the wiring pigtail more or less follows a sub frame over to the Main frame & travels a short distance along to the Drivers side frame close to the drivers side rear tire, where the is another wiring connection.
I don't know why that connection is located there, unless if you wanted to remove sensitive parts if work was needed to be done on the Exhaust pipe on that side.
