Was wondering what the purpose of the blanket/cover that surrounds the battery is for. Anyone have an idea?

Keep the heat out in summer, keep it in in winter and absorb acid in case of a catastrophic failure.

Keeping the battery clean, offering some protection against inadvertent shorts, keeping shirt sleeves off the battery and out of the lube on the posts, are a pretty good start. There are likely more, too.

Here's a question, does anyone know what year they switched from using the felt style cover to the padded cover? My '14 has the felt style.

Change in temp is a battery killer. Battery blanket is pretty effective at reducing cold to hot, hot to cold temp changes.

My '17 has a felt cover, slightly roughed up by chipmunks.

Yeah, same with mine. :) That's why I asked, I was considering replacing it with the padded style. May need to stop by the dealer and see if they have one in stock to measure. The parts catalog actually lists both for my '14, with the padded one noting "750 amp" and the felt one noting "800 amp".

^^^yes same on my 2018. Pretty heavy firm 1/2" thick formed material. Carpet padding is a good description.

Kad nailed it, this is what they are for but IMO they don't do any of these things well.

I take them off anything I own so I can actually see the battery.

Do they make a better one?

Well, I thought they did (the top one in the picture) but I stopped by the parts counter at my local dealer on the way home and he was able to look up the measurements on the two. It appears that the other one is for the diesel trucks and is smaller (by about 1.5" on the longest side).
