My god what a pain in the ass. I bought a set of the ceramic shorties for super cheap from a guy trading his truck in. It took me about 10-12 hours to install them bc it takes the magic from Merlin's beard to reach half of them. I also had to remove my starter to reach 3 bolts on the drivers side but I was gungho and just had to have headers to go with my other upgrades. My opinion is that they are a complete waste of time and money. You cannot feel or hear any difference whatsoever. The only upside is that you don't have to worry about broken manifold bolts or seized studs if you replace with stage 8 bolts. Oh well keep saving for long tubes and y-pipe and do it the same time as my cam.

I am sure my truck runs a lot better that having stock manifolds. I am going to upgrade to long tubes and catless y pipe and most definitely pay someone to do it lol

I put JBA LT's with y pipe, and magnaflow exhaust on my 2010 Ram and Ill be honest it was so damn loud in the cab of my truck it made me not want to drive it. The drone at 2k rpm was almost unbearable. And luckily I had a tune that could turn the MDS off or I would have had to deal with that kicking in as well. Idk but I think this time, (not anytime soon) Ill be going with the shorties. Compared to the stock manifolds Im sure they allow the 5.7 to breath better and with other mods will work just fine for mid level upgrades. (not looking for a drag truck). But to each his own. Good luck and have fun, that's all that matters.

Shorty headers are a waste of time and money for the most part. The gains if any will be negligeable. If you’re doing headers, do it properly with long tubes.

What size Magnaflow do you have?

With long tubes headers, can you hear a difference? Does it sound different? Hard to explain - but when you hear a older car - you can tell it has headers vs manifolds...

Oh yeah you’ll hear the difference for sure. It’s loud as hell. With the off road y pipe. No cats it’s very loud.

Anything with the cats removed is going to be loud as hell especially if you put a muffler on there that's basically straight thru. Put the stock muffler back on and I bet it will still sound good. It totally amazes me the amount of guys riding around blowing thru just cats with no mufflers and how annoying it sounds.

Longtube headers will make more hp and tq across a wider rpm range than shorties. The stock cats and Y-pipe are very restrictive as well though, so replacing those is half the gain. Installing shorties without addressing the stock cats and crushed Y-pipe is why people see such minimal gains from the shorty headers.

Eh, I'd still go with shorties and new y-pipe. Didn't know the cats were that restrictive, I'm guessing there are better flowing replacements?

Not only the cats but the y-pipe itself is restrictive. If your going to replace the cats for more power, you really should replace the entire y-pipe. AFE makes a y-pipe with cats that will bolt up to shorties and will flow very well.

Long tubes is the ultimate way to go tho. They will make good gains throughout the power band. Kooks and Stainless Works are 2 of more popular options out of the brands we carry.

does the afe y pipe w/cats for shorties need a tune or is that a bolt on install? Just want to know if it would cause a CEL.

If you take off the cats, are you going to pass emissions testing in places like California?

That is a tough one as with cats it SHOULD NOT throw a CEL but these newer computers are more picky than ever and what may work on one truck may not work on another. With the added flow I would recommend a tune anyway just to make the most of the new mods and to also make sure AFR is on point.

It will not pass emissions testing without cats, we are not even allowed to ship them to Cali...As far as other states technically no but depending on the type of emissions testing that is done and how lenient the shop doing it is you can pass....

It will throw a code with high flow cats unless you tune for it or use o2 sensor spacers to pull the sensors out of the exhaust stream. It will not pass emissions if they put a sniffer in the tailpipe, but it will pass if you are tuned for them and they only plug into the OBD2 plug to verify that the sensors are active and ready. I dont run cats on my trucks here in TX, and I pass because the custom tuning keeps the codes away without shutting the o2 sensors off.
