Been having a hard time searching through forums so decided at last to join one and ask my questions directly. I’ve got a 2019 1500 Classic Tradesman, trying to find a replacement bed cover that’s as waterproof as possible. Truck came with a weather tech one when I bought it and it’s falling apart and leaks like crazy. Need to keep gear and other stuff dry and secure. Would appreciate advice on options to invest in. Considering Rough Country but I’m open to better ideas from anyone who’s used better covers than RC.

This is what I have, full Fiberglass Tonneau, painted to match vehicle color. Works for me. A lot of People like the Trifolds and some like the retractable covers.
What you put over the bed also depends upon how You plan to use the truck. Not 100% waterproof, but dang near close. Bout only time any water intrusion be like
car wash that sprays with a lot of force sideways, can get up under the cover if U aim it that way. Cover covers sides and tailgate top. Cover not hard to remove but you need 2 people as it is one piece and big and wieldy.

@stevo19
ADDED: If you plan on using the bed to get big stuff, etc.,. than a roll n lock retractable of a trifold may better suit you. I personally have a 14' Stock trailer so
if I have to get anything big, I just use my trailer. Again, totally depends upon how you plan to utilize your ride.

I had a Gator tri fold on my 11 ram which works great but if I needed full bed access it needed to be removed completely. It wasnt difficult at all to remove but I had to keep it somewhere so it didnt get damaged. That made it a little bit of a pain when my girlfriend sees $hit at a random tag sale that we passed by lol. When I traded the truck in for my 21 ram I decided to go with a soft roll up cover. This one allowed me to simply roll it up to the cab for full bed access so I didnt have to be removed. Both styles let water in during a hard downpour but it was minimal at best. Zero water intrusion if I go through the automatic car wash. I got the roll up cover on Amazon for $179 shipped to my door and its still going strong even in these New England winter months

I’ve thought about the full piece but that would be a tough one to work with for a lot of my bed needs, a trifold is more what I’m looking for, that’s what is currently on my truck but the thing is worn out already.

I saw that one on Amazon while window shopping around, but i prefer the flip up options over the roll up. I couldn’t find one from Gator for mine when I tried looking that up earlier before making the post. A bunch of brands I’ve never heard of, RC and Weather Tech and Mopar were all Amazon had. Wasn’t sure how I felt about the rough country one though, if I’m dropping almost 900 on a bed cover I’d want to know it’s durable and weatherproof. A lot of the reviews on that one were saying they only last a couple years before leaking. Then there’s the weird brand I’ve never heard of that’s a few hundred bucks less with similar reviews

Well, late at night and a Saturday., Give it a few and I am sure more will chime in. FTR: My cover is MOPAR, and bought through dealer, so U know not cheap.

You can also use the "SEARCH" function as there have been a lot of threads on Bed Covers

I bought a backflip and had it changed out with two new ones , all of them leaked .
A lot.
It was convenient to flip it for partial bed access .
The biggest issue with it leaking was the bed liner would hold the water .
Then the sun rises ,and the water evaporates to condensation on the underside of the topper .

Which drips through out the entire bed.
There are lots of lookalikes to the bakflop now , so perhaps those do not let the water enter so easily.

If I get a new cover it will be a one piece like turkeybird shows.

I bought the newer version BakFlip MX4 a few months ago. It's a tri-fold. Very nice quality IMHO. It fit well, seems sturdy, and doesn't leak much at all. I think a lot of the leaking with the MX4 was with older versions, and would also depend on how careful you are with installation. Even after going through high pressure car wash, I notice very little water intrusion. I've been extremely happy with it. It's not cheap, but you can often find a sale and get $$$ off.

This is mine (parked under my lift in garage):

I made a catch-all box from a black crate, and it's a great place for storage:

I have been happy with my Tyger tri-fold, had it about 5 years now, it’s holding up good.
It is easy to remove when hauling something big, 5-10 minutes by yourself, no leaks except when washing and that is very little if I spray at an angle instead of directly at the seam.
I do remove it when snow is in the forecast, which is not very often, heavy snow can stretch a soft top.
I also use a vinyl protectant which has kept it looking new IMO, so for a little over 200$ I would definitely get another one if price is a concern.
Look wise, I like the covers that sit flat, level with the bed instead of on top that will be the kind I get next time.
Recent picture to show wear, or lack of.

I recently installed a soft, roll-up tonneau cover (Tyger T1) over the 6' bed of my 2022 Laramie. I haul my drumkit, light show and P.A. back there almost every weekend. So far, so good. It does what it's supposed to yet doesn't seem to mind the 80mph interstate speeds here in SW Oklahoma.

I've been very pleased with the amazon roll up cover. After 5 years it still looks and functions like new. I'm in New England and have had upwards of 10 inches of snow laying on it without any issues. It actually looks like a tri fold cover because it has 2 support bars which roll up with the cover. With it rolled up it does not block visibility out of the back windows. I've contemplated name brand covers but I just can justify cost after this one has been great for me 1000004302.jpg582.jpg

Keep in mind if water doesn't get in, little or no air does either and things can get moldy if you put them in there wet. I just have a basic roll-up and it lets some water in but if my coveralls, etc. get wet I just lay them out on top of my other things and they air-dry pretty quickly. As for things that must remain dry, I just use plastic bins with lids. It also makes things easy when I need to clear the bed for other usage.... just grab the bins and stack them.

Bottom line - how you will use your truck bed.....?

I had a soft tonneau cover on my truck 25 years ago......if all you want to do is have a basic cover over your bed, with very basic out of the weather considerations, and without concern for sincere security and leaving stuff in the bed, the soft, roll up or fold up, can fit the bill......if this does fit your needs for now, I would not spend more than $200 on one - there are way too many inexpensive and good options in this area........and, not too much above that price point, and you can get into various solid folding tri fold covers, in the $400-$500 range.

My last truck had an Extang Solid Fold hard cover that I found online, delivered, for $450.00. It was a great bed cover, I felt fairly secure to leave semi valuable stuff in the bed overnight, as long as I was in a decent location, but it was “not” super weather proof, as water would find its way into the bed. The cover sat on top of the bed rails, but was completely self contained, which meant that 1 person could remove the cover and put it in the garage or in the back seat of the truck, in under 5 minutes.....

The upgrade to the solid fold type cover is the current style, flush mount solid covers, such as the Bak Flip, and my choice, the Lomax, amongst others. Purchase price ballpark here is $800-$1200ish.

I use my current truck, and specifically the truck bed, more like a large trunk, than a truck bed. Considering this, I put on a solidfiberglass cover, from Ranch, purchased online, and color matched from them, delivered to my door, for just over $1200.00. Install takes 2 people about 10 minutes, but my need was increased security, and ultimately bestweatherproofing for any cargo.

These types of solid fiberglass covers vary widely in cost from about $800 for a basic black universal type, to $2000+ for a color matched high end model.

So, my advice = you first have to sit down and figure out your budget - there is no sense in getting all excited about something that isn’t within your budget right now, and, with that thought, if you are on the fence now with money, it is better off to wait, in my opinion, and save $$$, and get what you want and that fits your needs, when you can afford it.

Buying a cheap/inexpensive soft cover now, when you really want/need a more secure cover in reality, is like throwing away a few hundred $$$$ - in my opinion....

There are lots of options in every category - you first have to figure out what category, or your budget, and then where your needs/wants fit in, and then narrow the field of options down to what fits in your budget with your wants/needs.

Good luck - happy shopping.

I personally went with the BAKFlip MX4 and really appreciate how well it fits and functions, keeps the bed dry, and looks great, too.

Are you looking for a hard tri-fold, hard roll up, or retractable? If you want a hard tri fold, the BAK MX4 newest version does a great job at keeping the water out. We offer most of the major manufacturers and have a lot of bed cover customers that have given us feedback.

Message me and we can discuss options, features, and pricing
