true that. I thought I wanted a regular cab again as I have had plenty of them in the old days, my first was in 1977. Then I spent an hour in a new regular cab truck and I had forgot how cramped they are and how nice the crew cab extra room was.But I know everyone has different needs and likes.
I can store five gallon buckets behind the seats on my '07 regcab. I'm 6'4' and have to have the seat forward quite a bit to reach the pedals. The 8' bed is indispensable for cabovers or heavier poptops like my Northstar TC800. The GM's are cramped and Fords are boxy but still not as long a cab as Rams. The front doors are longer on the regcabs than the quadcabs.

Here you go. 5th gen AEV prospector tray bed. That’s what I would work toward if I was going off road regular cab. 40” tires

My old Chevy K1500 EC didn't suit my needs for a tow vehicle. I knew I wanted an 8' bed but didn't want to drive a bus (CC) around. My regular cab suits my needs and actually has quite a bit of storage behind the seats even with my long legged 6'3" height. My 6.4L engine actually gets better mpg than expected even with a 4.10 rear gear. My reg cab Ram has better handling than my Chevy EC as far as maneuverability and making U-turns and than can be important in some situations. The ride quality is a bit rough with the heavy duty suspension but overall I'm very pleased with my reg cab.

For rock crawling my first choice would be a Toyota Tacoma with the Access Cab and the 6' bed. Second choice would be a Ram Rebel with the quad cab but that would cost $10,000 more than the Tacoma. A huge advantage with the Ram trucks is the availability of the 33 gallon gas tank and no need to bolt on jerry can racks. With the existing regs an aftermarket gas tank is not an option unless the engine is a diesel one and I would not want an unreliable diesel engine for use in the backcountry.
