^^^ mind you those comments are for causation and nothing to do with op, since you brought it up. As in cause of lifters and cam lobs being wiped in the first place.

Curious if you had smoke/blow by before 6.4 intake or other mods?

None. And I did it all in “stages”:

1. LTs and exhaust and fan swap
2. 6.4 manifold
3. Cam, Head work, Stall converter

There was only about a week between 6.4 manifold and cam swap, but I didn’t notice anything. I did have a catch can on the 5.7 manifold and noticed oil in it. (About 4oz after 6 months of driving). The 6.4 manifold PCV is all internal, so no spot for catch can. I put a new pcv on the manifold before installing, too.

Blue smoke on start-up usually entails wore out valve seals and loose guides, blue smoke on de-acceleration usually points to shakey rings.Oil smoke on start-up is from oil leaking past the valve stem seals and down the valve guides, while smoke on de-acceleration is from high vaccumn in the cylinders pulling oil past the rings. I'd run 5W-30,but if your valve guides and seals are wore out,it won't do anything for the blue smoke on start-up.

The first one sounds like a BMW issue. *laughs in hoovies garage* [emoji38]

Just burning a little at startup. A little puff and then nothing. Not getting any while during acceleration or deceleration. May have incorrectly assumed blow by for just using a little oil.
Overall, I was just curious if I should be overly concerned or wait it out to see if it gets better or worse. Also seen a lot of people running thicker oil after cam swaps and head work like I did. I realize this is not likely the culprit, but wanted to see what the community had to say. Which overall has been helpful save for a few destructive comments.

I would think if it was "leftover" oil from rebuild it should clear after the first start or 2. If it's just some at startup, that would point to oil leaking by a valve seal after turning off engine, and most likely an intake valve. Did you check for play in the valve guides when puting the seals in?

Didn’t get any play that I thought would be concerning.

I would question the head work then if no oil blow by before hand, incorrect seals or damaged when installing.

The valve should move freely in the guide and have no noticable play when moving side to side so if you had some noticeable play then the guides should have been knurled.
He stated that there was no blow by here https://www.ramforum.com/posts/2411673/
before cam/head/intake mods.........so seal install is probably culprit

If it's just a damaged or missing seal that's no problem, it can be done without removing the heads. If its a worn guide then the heads have to come off.

A good friend of mine once pointed out all computer chips run on blue smoke. It's when they let the smoke out, that's when they stop running. :)

Blue smoke? Is it oil or gas? Only on startup? Possibly a leaky injector.
