I am close to pulling the trigger on a 2020 Power Wagon. It’s a left over, so it’s new. Just wondering if there’s a break-in period for a HD truck where they don’t recommend hauling trailers and such.

Thanks!

The owner's manual states to wait 500 miles before towing a trailer, gives time for the axle gearing to "break in".

Yep. From the manual.

No tow for 500

Slow tow for first 500 of towing.

I followed it with probably being 6-800 miles of slow towing. Lot of people think of it as hog wash. I never thought I would own new truck. I'll follow the steps as cheap insurance and peace of mind. If you own a trailer it's relatively cheap to just "knock out" those 500 slow miles. The no towing for first 500 was easy for me and I don't drive my truck far. I have owned it a year and have not broken 5000 miles total. But they have been reliable enjoyable miles none the less and when I did hookup was quite happy.

With being a long time Chrysler tech in the dealership I have always followed the recommendation for the first 500 miles for break-in but that's it. After 500 miles my trucks go to work. No slow-tow for the next 500 miles. If I have something to haul I am going to haul it and drive it like I normally would. These are my opinions and how I have operated in the past. Good luck with your new ride!

You won’t be towing much with the PW. Driving over things, now that’s a different story. Pics or it didn’t happen....

500-1000 mile break in. Change out oil and filter to remove metals. Then tow it like you stole it.

I drove mine easy for 500 miles, then a little light towing. My owners manual advised some short wide open throttle runs also. That was fun, I had just install my exhaust system and enjoyed those short runs. I needed to move my tractor a short distance at 750 miles, so I took it easy. (13500 lbs). I did my first oil change at 1500 miles. I feel like my break-in should be good to go.

Is the first oil change recommended around 1,500 miles, or is that just "cheap insurance"? I'm just over that now with 1,600 miles. Will it really make that big a difference? Does the factory put some kind of special break-in oil to start?

Looks like you have a cummins so different oil change intervals then the gas these guys are talking about here. Per the manual they are every 15K miles and what I have done mine at since day 1.
I'm sure you will get a lot of "opinions" but that is what the people that manufactured the vehicle suggest and what is in your manual.

I did my first oil change with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40 at about 600 miles. The engine idles noticeably quieter and smoother than it did before hand, so I am glad I did. I will be changing it every 5k miles as well in attempt to minimize the possibility of the "Hemi tick" and engine failures that plague these trucks as they age.
