Hey guys figured I'd start a new thread here. I'm looking to see what kind of ideas and set ups people are running for the camping seasons so I can make something for me, the girlfriend, and our husky. I've seen the canvas bedtent, I don't mind it at all, however I only have a 5.5' box. If I had the 6.5 is just by a topper and be done but unfortunately I bought a used pickup and had to sacrifice somewhere. Anyways please post any pictures and comments you guys have!

There is a company in the states that builds slide in campers that will fit a 5.5ft box. Capri campers http://capricamper.com/.

Myself, I converted a Medic unit into a camper for my girlfriend myself and our pup. Just a simple space for sleeping in. Has a heater lights and outdoor stereo, nothing special just a place to sleep that's off the ground. Was a $500 project.

Oh that looks good! I'm a carpenter by trade so I'd rather build something or fix something up myself! And of course building on a budget, couple things more important right now. Thanks for sharing, looks like it would be really roomy in there.

Yeah its not to bad for a 8ft x 6ft box haha, when I got it one whole corner was rotted out so we replaced that and converted the inside to have a bed and 12v power, next winter I might add a small propane heater from a tent trailer. Not overly hard to find if your willing to travel, I think I saw a couple for sale in Saskatchewan!!

If you plan on going with a camper shell here’s a few things I did to mine. 1” thick insulation and carpeted, interior/exterior lights, fantastic fan, 12v heater (temp install), 100w solar panel, 500w inverter, two 12v marine batteries, tankless water heater, 8 gallon water tank, removable bed box and AC window unit with generator (summer).

Wow that looks like a kool build! If I had the 6.5' box I'd be more open to the cap, but with a 5.7' and me being 6'1" it's be a little tight lol. I considered doing the cap and making some sort of flip out wall/screen in area for over the gate but not sure how it'd work out. When I had my graduation party ages ago I had a Silverado with the 8' box and a cap, let me tell you that was the bees knees.

I use (2) 1" pvc pipes, bow them, and install them in the stake bed holes. Then i cover it with a tarp. Cheap, easy, and sets up and easy to take down.

That’s an awesome idea I think I’ll do that

I Love My 2018 RAM 2500HD 4x4 6.4L
Mod list: Pedal Commander, AVS Vent shades, Solo Delete kit, molar side step rails

This may or may not be helpful to you. About a year ago there was a member who used to post in the "Member Truck" section that was big into camping in his truck and had all sorts of ideas and conversions that he made for his truck for camping on the "trail". He hasn't posted for awhile but the information was really good. He posted a lot so you might have to wade through a lot of threads.

I see you're down in TX, but I've come across a few guys that have precut kits you can assemble on your own coming out of the Salem-Eugene OR area. Totally customizable with power, a/c, cooking area etc

Anyone ever make their own camper trailer? I've got an 8x11 skidoo trailer that would make the perfect platform to make a camper, sort of a redneck enclosed trailer. Ganna have to crunch some number see if I can make it work for cheap enough, I'd like to stay under 1000$ on whatever I decide to do, so many options! Loving all the ideas guys!

Do you guys with soft sided camper equipment know about bear attacks in our forests?

If a bear is determined to get in a camper, they can get in regardless it is cloth, aluminum or fiberglass. They have been known to rip car doors off to get to food. I suggest keeping a shotgun handy.

I've been in areas over the years where you couldn't camp with soft sided campers or tents. Last summer in British Columbia they closed campgrounds to those. One place had a 6 wire electric fence enclosure where tents could setup. In Colorado I've never heard of a hard sided camper having bear problems but I do hear of people being dragged out of there tents from time to time. A shotgun is always a good idea when camping for both 4 legged and 2 legged problems.
