Can anyone chime in on the pro's or con's of removing the converters on a 5.7 Hemi? Would this throw codes? increase fuel economy?

Thanks

It'll light up your dash with codes if you pull the convertors off an untuned truck. On a basically stock truck,i doubt you'll see much milege gain if any with-out them, plus it'll stink to high heaven, and if you park it inside you're eyes will water like a bugger shortly after you start it,lol.

This was a common practice back in the day when cats were restrictive and you still wanted to burn leaded gas. Its a total waste of time nowadays. You will need tuning also which will require an unlocked PCM. Guaranteed to run like **** without out it.

Pros: none, really.
Con's: removing a cat, even in your own vehicle, is a violation of federal law. So there's that. I'd say that's a con. :Nonono::D
Modern unleaded gas smells terrible without cats, smells mostly sweet from the nasty ethanol they put in it. If you want a good smell try racing gas and burn't rubber at a drag strip. That smell will take you back in time!

I'm just happy we have ethanol free gas, my 66 buick runs great on it and has that great overly gassy old car smell.

Lots of speculation on this with no hard data. The fact that these trucks are so tamed down on the bolt on side of things tells me the converters are restrictive as well.

There was a Charger 5.7 8 Speed R/T that gained 20whp under the curve with cam/bolt-ons so I'd expect the trucks to be no different with hi-flow CCs. They also become more congestive over time being ceramic and can overheat versus a substrate.

Edit-This is also restrictive on the big end.

The cat on my old '98 R/T frazzled into pieces over time. I pulled off the cat, removed the junk, drove a piece of straight pipe through the shell with a BFH, then reinstalled it. It would only set a CEL maybe twice a year depending on how it was driven, weather conditions, etc. Easy to clear with a code reader back then, new stuff is prolly much different.

Loved that smell. I forgot but my brain just reminded me how it was. Thanks for the memories.

most states you will not pass emissions test and the engine will run crazy. its tuned with them.
