Thanks for explaining that Rick, and for the pics Ed. Seems like someone asks that any time there’s a thread about catch cans, and for this the pictures speak a thousand words as they say.
Eds ports aren't the worst i've seen by any stretch Mike,i've actually had intake manifolds that literally pored oil out of them when you tipped them on their side, and the ports had at least an 1/8th inch of build up on them.

Oh, absolutely Rick. I’ve seen the inside of intake manifolds from Hondas, Chevys, Toyotas, among others, that were much worse than Ed’s pics. I haven’t seen one that dripped oil though lol. But then again I haven’t torn down a Hemi yet. I didn’t convert to Dodge until about 2015 and haven’t put enough miles on any of them I’ve owned.

DANG PA, NJ that whole area on inspection stuff. Heck, as a kid in the early 70's NJ, having to go to state inspection stations where they did emissions, jacked up car checked ball joints, etc, headlights. SEEMS like everytime failed for headlights and of course there was the "private" garage right next store that did headlight re-alignment and you got yer sticker, tell me that wasn't a gimmick. Of course, after you paid the entire re-inspection fee and the garage fee for the "proper alignment", etc .,.
One more plus for this area in NC. No emissions testing at all and $14 for the inspection (no sticker, as it's tied to the registration via computer). Inspection was $6.50 last year

I didn't get mine quite as clean as yours, Rick, but they're a damn sight better than when I started.

You did a wicked job of cleaning up your heads and pistons Ed,i dare say no shop would ever do as good of job as you're doing :waytogo: I'm not easily impressed, but you've definitely impressed me with your attention to detail;)

That was a pure 200k with not much done. I ran Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner a few times and RedLine once or twice, but that's it. Intake bolts were tight, and I'm embarrassed to say I never once cleaned my throttle body.

By the time you're done, she should run like a brand new truck :waytogo: Next up will be doing a tranny service along with one of Jesse's bypasses, and that'll be a piece of cake for you,now that you have a cam replacement under your belt:Big Laugh:

I have one of Jesse's bypasses w/cap that I ordered a couple months back. I'm tempted to do a drain and fill on the trans first, then after a month or so, switch to the PPE along with fresh Mopar unicorn shizz.

This is what the intake ports should look like.

That head's been run with a catch can? Or is the picture after the heads been cleaned?

Dusty

It's been run since new with a Moroso can,so all it took to clean them up like that was a quick wipe with a rag

A catch can will not catch everything. So no intake ports will look that clean after any appreciable mileage. But running a catch can greatly reduces the amount of build up that will occur inside the intake manifold and intake runners. Notice how clean the cylinder 1 and 2 intake valves are in Ed's pics in post #18. Having port injection keeps the back of the intake valves clean, but does nothing for the rest of the intake system.

These were my heads when we did my cam almost 10 years ago,and it had had a moroso can since it had 120 miles on it. The truck had about 20,000 miles on it at the time Mike. This was with no cleaning at all, just the way we pulled them off the truck

Where Kurtis says "update" about half way through his #4 post, everything after that is my truck

Ed you'll notice we didn't clean the piston tops,or heads, lol. I drove the truck to Kurtis's place about 8:00 that morning, and between Dylan/Kurtis and I it was back up and running by 4:00 that afternoon, but i already had the headers /rad and bunch of other stuff removed when they showed up around 10:00. I bought pizza at 5:00 and was back home with the truck a little after 6:00 that evening,so we didn't waste anytime cleaning parts like the heads, lol
We did it at Kurtis's place as he wanted to get more pic's to add to his cam swap thread ;)

That’s pretty impressive but it’s only 20k miles. IMHO the Moroso cc is one of the better cans out there. I’d be interested to see the intake runners after 100k+ miles. Or maybe a pic with intake runners after 20k miles with no catch cans. That might convince some of the naysayers out there.

HA, U remember those days huh. Man, I hated dat BS they did. And if U went out there and argued or showed an attitude or even a level of concern, U sure got the rejection red/white sticker with 20 days to correct. Dem bastids, lmao. Nothing but a money making racket right there,. Especially the "private" garage right next store, that you just drove out the end of the State Building, turned around, went to private Garage. 30 minutes later, wala, all of a sudden you were good, hmmmmmmm. Tell me no greasing of palms there.

I kind of think it also has alot to do with the way the vehicle is drove to.The truck was drove hard right from word go,and was on the dragstrip racing when it had a little over 400 miles on it.The easier drove vehicles seem to carbon up the intake ports and collect more oil in the manifold then one that has the crap drove out of it,lol.Higher velocity airflow through the manifold doesn't let any of the byproducts that make it past the catch can,to actually collect in a manifold or port and create a build-up of oil and carbon

I admit I drive more "gently" than the Hemi may have been designed for, but...

There are a couple places I routinely stop, red light, then go left and it's almost 1 mile fairly steep upgrade. I use tow/haul and get pretty sporty with the skinny pedal. The 5.7 and it's exhaust make daddy happy. Even pushing 1/2 to the floor I can be doing over 80mph well before the top. That "fat lady" is definitely singing up that hill. The Mrs just rolls her eyes. Hey, I'm just cleaning out the pipes!

Same thing getting on the interstate. Right time of night and I'll see almost 90 just before the end of the ramp. Then it's about 18 miles to the state line and 18 miles back. Certainly no track vehicle like Wild Man but I do try to stretch it out occasionally. :Big Laugh:

It's currently at my local mechanic for the state mandated safety and emissions inspections, and a rotate of my Falken Wildpeaks.
