Hello all, so the water pump on my 2013 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi went out and I just finished installing the new one. I filled the radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and started the truck to let it run and add coolant as needed. Well shortly after I started the truck coolant started getting pushed back out of the fill cap (I did not put the radiator cap back on). So I turned the truck off and back on. Let it run for a while thinking maybe it was just some trapped air and to let the thermostat open and get into the motor. Well the more it ran the worse it was being pushed out the radiator. I let it get up to about 150 degrees before I decided to shut it off and see if I could figure out if that’s normal or if something is going on. Now I’m stumped because I can’t find any information online about it and I’ve done jobs before where coolant was drained and needed to be refilled and didn’t have this issue. So can someone tell me if this sounds like just air trapped in the system or if I have something else going on? I took and video and will try and upload it or put it on YouTube and link it here. Thanks for any help anyone can provide in advance!

I would get that test kit from an auto parts store to see if its air or if you've got exhaust fumes in the coolant like a blown head gasket.

It is air. Doing the water pump drained the block. It will continue to do that until the thermostat opens and allows the rest of the air to come out. Only allowing it to get to 150 you still have lots of air to work out. Let it run to operating temperature and continue to run it will keep spilling till the air works out. When big bubbles come it will blow out. Without doing a vac fill or using a cap with a funnel to help keep it at bay that's what will happen. Let it run you still have lots of air to go. This is the very basics of bleeding a system dont bother messing with tests and pressures till you successfully get the air out and system filled right and continue to have a problem. Let it get to temperature and run for another 5 10 minutes before putting the cap on to be sure it has all worked out. Place the cap on fill the jug then shut it off and let it cool. Once it's cold top the jug off to the full line and you are done. Very basic

Oh okay. I've never had this issue as I've been pretty lucky about bleeding a coolant system.

Someone screwed the pooch, you are gonna need to flush that thing like 4 times with OAT. Does your truck take 10 year or 5 year coolant, from owners manual?

Three main types of coolant, IAT, HOAT, and OAT. The two that are the worst to mix are IAT with OAT, but none play nice with each other. It is a huge effort to flush, as the drivers block bolt is near impossible to remove. You should flush a bunch of times, and from here on out flush yearly with at least a couple gallons 50/50 water plus what coolant that takes, likely OAT? Your year was right on the change date so it can be oat or hoat, you need to look it up.

Agreed. Gotta burp the air out.

+1 for the coolant info. Do not mix!

My 2013 was HOAT. My 2014 is OAT. Definitely check your manual, and buy the right stuff. Its not necessarily cheap, but cheaper than fixing the damage to the engine later.

Check to be sure that you put the belt on correctly - maybe it's turning backwards?

When you drain the block dry by doing a water pump or removing the lower rad hose it can be a ***** to get coolant back in there because the thermostat may or may not open at the right time due to no coolant being behind it. When you had the system dry you really should have replaced the thermostat after the water pump. When I have that out I like to dump coolant into the thermostat opening until it is almost full then pop the thermostat in and fill the rest of the system. Now the thermostat is surrounded by coolant and will open when it should so you can burp the system.

Next to the thermostat housing is a allen bolt that you remove when filling the coolant system. It helps a lot with air being trapped in the system.

filling and emptying, take it off before draining and don't put it back til you fill it.

WOW I guess I'm one of the lucky ones? I did a drain and refill when I hit 60K. I went back with green O' reilly house brand that says for all makes/ all models.....@ 83K no problems except the broken manifold bolts. 2014 5.7 1500

You guys just putting random coolant in your trucks... be prepared to have nightmares..... I suggest you flush the living **** out of it... like 3 days and 3 flushes a day with straight water then run what ever you want. Look on you tube to see what happens when you mix coolants. I watched one where guy mixed I Believe “Hoat $ Oat” could of been two different types, but regardless it turned into a thick sludge, clogged all the cooling jackets and even the water pump. Mixing cooling types is BAD! As far as the OP”s issue, after he is done flushing all his coolant he will have burping down to a science!

Op - I highly recommend you flush and flush and flush, then refill. Just my opinion.
