So I picked up a 98 reg cab 2wd with a 5 speed, I don,t know if you need that info but I smell antifreeze inside when driving. I don,t see any leaks inside or outside but I,m thinking the core is going bad. Can anyone give some insight on whats involved with changing the core out. Or is there another alternative. Thanks for any advice.

I changed it on my 99 years ago in my back yard and it was a pain in the ass but i was broke so....Basically you just get the whole dash loose and pull it far enough away on the passenger side to access the heater core. Totally doable in 1 day. I used a short 2x4 to hold the dash up and out far enough reach in there and change it out. If i remember correctly it was only like a $100 part or something too. You'll also need some cheap AC line removal tools and a recharge kit.IMG_1256.JPG IMG_1257.JPG IMG_1258.JPG

See You Tube video below. Guys are changing them without pulling the HVAC box. Once the dash is rolled back, they cut the metal tubes and lift the core out the top. They cut the new cores tubes in the same location and splice the tubes together with heater hose.

This guy doesn't pull the box either and doesn't splice the lines.

One thing to be careful of: if the truck is on any kind of slope, block the tires. Last time i did a core i got pretty lucky my brother's truck was 2ft behind mine lol. The dash being pulled back can change the gears or break what the cable hooks to
