Check your intake manifold bolts

I checked mine again yesterday. They all needed about 3/4 of a turn. I noticed a marked throttle response improvement. The only other variable is that I replaced the PCV valve. I'm not sure which maintenance item caused the drive ability improvement. I presume the intake was the culprit.

They do have a habit of losing torque.I check a couple of the easy ones to get at, pretty well every oil change with a 5/16's or 8 mm nut driver,if i can twist them by hand,it's time to go over all of them

Thanks @Wildone I just bought a 2016 with 140K miles. Intake bolts were very loose. Tightened to spec with torque wrench. At least one to one and a half turns on each bolt.

That's not uncommon on a Hemi with a few miles on it,especially if they've never been re-torqued

Wild one: just wanted to say thank you for this. I made an account specifically to thank you (I’ve followed along and read for years, but never made an actual account).

Changed oil today and decided to check my intake bolts because of this post. Every single one of mine were loose! 83K miles. Notably the corner bolts were the most loose. I’m certain that I had an intake leak that I didn’t even realize… truck idling and running better already. Crazy!

Definitely check these bolts frequently. I never would’ve thought about this being a thing!

I got my truck with 111k,and bolts were loose.Torqued by hand.They do get loosened after a while.And at 111k, 2 of my sparkplugs were just screwed in till they stopped.I pulled all out and changed them anyway.

I will be checking the wifes 5.7 this week. She has almost 9,000 miles, and I never heard of this. I will check them on my new truck as well starting with the second oil change. I just did the first oil change at 1200 miles, so I have a while. Thank you for the info...

I've done them enough,i just use a 1/4" drive ratchet and my calibrated hand

There was a time when I was in new product development engineering, that my feel was so good I could tell the size of a bolt by looking at it and the hit the torque within a couple of ft-lbs without a torque wrench.

I picked up those abilities at a very young age,as my Dad lost most of his right arm on a drilling rig ,just before i was born,so being the oldest i became his right arm.My Mom used to have a picture of me changing oil on the tractor when i was about 8,and i still have most of those abilities left

I really don't want to be the one to inform all of you armchair engineers that the thread (adhesive / locker / sealer) used on factory bolts is proprietary to Chrysler/ FCA and not knowing the exact formula or using any thread coating changes the factory torque values,

This is the type of tactic dealer/factory sales employ to complicate and deny warranty claims or insure sales of certain parts.
Especially torque specific engine parts, I’ll agree it is less critical than a crankshaft pulley bolt or with an older vehicle out of warranty but just the same. it should be mentioned.

…only if by chance someone can procure the factory red/ orange sealant then the same fasteners can be reused, the other alternatives are buying new OE bolts (with factory sealant pre-applied) or someone measuring the thread pitch and count of their existing bolts to calculate torque values and specific brand type of sealant to estimate < values used in it’s application.

If'n they're gonna develop their own common adhesive and claim warranty, I'll just snug until it feels good.

Because this joint loosens with mileage, which is a design flaw, according to this retired engineer from the powertrain industry.

And yes, the resultant air leak let's enough unfiltered air into the engine that isn't read by the MAP sensor upstream to cause too lean an AFR, causing the engine to sputter @ idle.
Ask me how I know.

They obviously didn’t calculate as many rodents would be using under the manifold and engine cover for them to go to the lab to complete a urinalysis and its effects on the sealant.
