Is that question directed at me?

If so look at pp 301 then it talks about Severe Operating Conditions and you may need to change your engine oil as soon as 3,500 miles. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles.

Ok, I re-read it, and it does not recommend against synthetic oil, but it also DOES NOT recommend synthetic oil either...it says 'you may use if..." (note bolded text)

Straight from my 2012 owners manual:

pg 624
Engine Oil Selection
For best performance and maximum protection under all types of operating conditions, the manufacturer only
recommends engine oils that are API Certified and meet the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395.

Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade)
SAE 5W-20 engine oil is recommended for all operating temperatures. This engine oil improves low temperature
starting and vehicle fuel economy. The engine oil filler cap also shows the recommended engine oil viscosity for
your engine. For information on engine oil filler cap location, refer to “Engine Compartment” in “Maintaining
Your Vehicle” for further information. NOTE: Vehicles equipped with a 5.7L engine must use SAE 5W-20 oil.
Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the Multi-Displacement System (MDS). Refer
to “Multi-Displacement System” in “Starting and Operating” for further information.

pg 625 (cont)
Lubricants which do not have both the engine oil certification mark and the correct SAE viscosity grade number
should not be used.

NOTE: For 2500/3500 trucks with a 5.7L engine operating under a gross combined weight rating of 14,000 lbs
(6 350 kg) or greater, SAE 5W-30 engine oil is recommended for all operating temperatures.

Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils if the recommended oil quality requirements are met and the recommended
maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed.

2017 rams OM recommend synthetic in every case, gears, tranny, and engine.

Sorry, but no, they don't...at least not for the engine.

Read page 622 of your manual under synthetic oils....(the very next page from what you quoted)

It says "you may use if....", it DOES NOT say "we recommend".

You can use it if it meets the requirements, but they do not recommend it.

I copied and pasted from 2017 rams owners manual online, dont know what else is there. nothing in either says dont use synthetic.

You are right, it doesn't say "don't use it", but it also doesn't say "use it".

Who is you ??

If directed at me......I use whatever the dealer puts in it.

I take it in once a year for state inspection and have them change the oil at that time, whether it needs it or not.

2012 bought brand new in July 2012, and it has just over 21k on it.

TRCM you are wrong on the issue. I can't post that any clearer from owners manual. Owners manual recommends synthetic in all of the main applications. What do you think for best performance means? And btw only pao meets transmission spec.

Not sure how I can be wrong....the 2017 owners manual, has the same exact wording in it as my 2012....it says you may use it...it does NOT say we recommend it.

It's on page 622 of the 2017 ram owners manual...I just downloaded it to check and see if they changed it for later years....they didn't.

Do what ya want, I am just trying to point out Ram doesn't recommend it, but they also don't say don't use it.

Here's the cut & paste from the 2017 manual.....

Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recommended oil quality requirements are met, and the recommended
maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed.

Synthetic engine oils which do not have both the engine oil certification mark and the correct SAE viscosity grade
number should not be used.

ok dude, lets say different owners manual say different things and call it a day.

I have been saying for 5 years around here synthetic oil matters most in the transmission and gears. At least in 2017 Ram owners manual totally agrees. Only synthetic PAO or Ester based fluid can possibly meet the 8 speed spec, and the only recommend synthetic in the gears. In these applications, every ram owners should be using real synthetic oil. Ram made the spec thin and has to stay in viscosity, cannot shear and meet spec. And the fluids look better then ever now that some guys are changing it.

I just really wanted to know if Royal Purple was a worthy oil to put in the Ram since I want to keep it for about 200k miles. Someone on another site said it will make your engine purple, which I don't know even how to nicely reply to.

The dealer wants 60 to put a blend in, another local shop wanted 55 to put Castrol Dino in. I used RP in my Nissan when I had that (everyone makes mistakes) and she actually ran better. I just don't want to void my warrenty because I was trying to do the right thing. When I called the dealer I felt like I would have gotten a clearer answer from my 5 year old in regards to the warrenty.

We look to each for advice here because we actually care enough about our trucks to investigate what we should, should not, and learn from others experience. At least that's why I'm here. Someone brought up about the factory oil filter. I forgot about that and they suck getting off, but I think I will still try.

Anyway for the users of Royal Purple and Penzoil Ultra Synthetic do you like them and what filter (except Fram) do you all use. Good oil is no good without a good filter.

Royal Purple is nothing special for the money, the took out the moly in their otc oil. I would only use Royal Purple filters. Their hps line isn't half bad, but there are much better oils. There is plenty of this in syn thread.

I use royal purple filters, I feel they are the best made. Costco deal m1 or Penzoil synthetics are a great choice.

Here is a starting point.

Now we have the Pennzoil synthetics, they are in a group of their own. Very clean base oil.

Oils are comprised of base oil and additive package.

I've used 5W20 PYB and PUP with a Mopar filter since new to keep my warranty intact. I've tried RP gear oil in my 12 Ram 1500 but only had it for a couple of thousand miles after that. It was indeed purple in color. My new 17 has Amsoil in the rear differential.
