Looking for any feedback on recent costs folks have experienced for replacing cam and lifters. I've got a 2015 1500 with a 5.7L, shop quoted me $5K.

I would do the work myself, but I live on the surface of the sun (Phoenix, AZ) so it's turbo hot right now and I only have the weekends to work on it and it's my daily driver.

Any feedback is appreciated.

First you need to find out if you have metal shaving in the oil, if so I would pull the engine, totally strip it and sent the block out to be hot tanked then reassembled with new parts JMHO...

Depends where you're located...

$11k to replace cam, lifters, water pump from a reputable shop. In SF, CA

There's also a risk of cam and lifters not work well if mechanic isn't experienced in this particular job

I decided not to do it... And got new truck instead.

I went with a performace. Shop in Dallas HPP racing. They didn’t know how to work on mopars and now I’ve had 2 other shops trying to repair it. Don’t use TSP lifters. MACHANICs need to be mopar specialist

Check out my thread:
I’m in Scottsdale I did the work myself… even with performance springs and hellcat pump and replacing all the timing stuff, I was @ ~$2800. It took me 2 weekends with my mess up. Without I would have definitely gotten it done in a weekend, prolly 20hrs of work. So $4500-5000 at going labor rates seems right.

Does anyone know the actual FACTORY labour allowance for a cam and lifter job? What about Chilton or some of the others?

dealership book time is 15 hours.

Thank you! They must be getting generous!
At $150/hr. or more, I'll bet. Plus parts markup.

Gotta pay salaries, rent, utilities, etc.

@jws123, If a mechanic makes commission, about how much do they get out of that job? Flat rate, percentage, ?????

I don't know of any dealerships in Canada that use that pay model. They typically use the "flat rate" system which is a $$$ figure per hour. Probably most shops are paying in the $30 to $40 per flat rate hour. Some shops probably higher. Using $40 per hour, the Tech would get $600 for that job.

There was a time way back in the 1960s when Mechanics were paid a portion of the labour. Back then, the shop took 55% and the Mechanic got 45%. There were a few dealerships in Ottawa doing that in the '60s but then someone realized that the Mechanics were making too much money.
Mind you the "door rate" wasn't $150.00 per hour back then, more like $7 to $10 per hour door rate.

So, you get 15 hours x your rate, even if you complete faster or slower than the book time.

IF you don't mind me asking, what's the average time for you to complete the job?

I'm sure most of the time you're ahead of the book time. Do you ever get behind on these jobs? Why?

Thank you for the insight. I always wondered how it works.

Book time is supposedly an average time to complete the task by the factory service manual, that is, no short cuts. When you perform a job, repitition can make the second and third time completing the task faster and faster. I don’t have a problem paying anyone book time for a job that is completed in less than the stated time. The mechanic shouldn’t be expected to pass any savings on for a job that he has mastered. He shouldn’t be penalized for getting it done quicker than expected. There are many jobs that bite a mechanic in the a$$ when he snaps a bolt or has to overcompensate for prior shoddy workmanship. But with that being said, I do believe in the mechanic doing a quality repair for the money paid.

Oh, I agree 100%. Where experience and repetition can definately be an advantage. That's why I was curious to learn how long it takes, best case, and what can snag you on a big job like this.

A proper job is most important in the end, and it is enlightening to learn how it works from someone who does this kind of job frequently.
