Hello Since i bought my truck a year ago next month! I have been looking for a CAI, i found a few things that would work and was tempted to buy a 2012 intake. But after reading everything, how the factory box is just as good one of those expensive ones, and its just the air hat which is restricting. Also a big concern was for me was warrenty.

Anywho i created my own intake with the help of another member on the forums, Alfred.Romeo, i created a intake using PVC, and couplers.

Ill do a right up when i get home tonight but here are some pictures.

Here is the write up i promised. So like i stated before i have been itching to remove the air hat on the truck, and i was going to buy a Airaid MIT, but for what i was getting i could fathom spending anywhere from 99+shipping to 129+shipping. I have seen alot of people make Intakes with white pvc and to me it looked so ghetto. So i disregarded it. I was still apprehensive about putting pluming pipe on a $30k truck. But i figured if i dont like it i can just take it off. So i went to Lowe's and got 3 things, All for 27.67!!

What you will need:
3 inch Coupler
2ft 3inch ABS pipe, (im sure PVC will work but a few people told me that ABS is better for heat resistance and longevity)
3inch elbow cupler

From lowes they came with hose clamps but if not you will need to get hose clamps that fit the pipes

To start with i broke down the intake system, Took out the air hat and the accordion, my bolt hole for the air hat broke, so i was pissed, be careful removing it.

From there i added my 3inch coupler to the factory air box. It took some gigging, so i got impaitent and used K&N oil spray onto a paper towel and wipped in on the surfaces so it would slide on better. Little lesson in life, if its tight, add lube.

After that i added my elbow to the TB and tightened it down a little to determine how much pipe i was going to need. At first it looks like there is no way in hell its going to work because the oil dipstick is kinda in the way but it works. I ended up cutting about 8-9 inches of pipe with a hand saw. A band saw would most likely be easier, but i didnt have one so i used a hand saw. the edges were rough and a little uneven so i got the bench grinder out and ran it on that a little and cleaned the edges up. From there i got some plyers and pryed off all of the melted plastic, then used a file and box cutted and got the small little frigglies. Once it was all prepped i wiped it down with a towel to get most if not all of the loose shavings off the tube. (I personally wouldnt worry to much if there is a few very small flakes in there, there going to blow out the exhaust) Sanding the cut may help aswell. Once prepped move it aside.

Go to the air hat that is taken out and remove the MAF or MAP what ever it is called in out trucks, and store the green O ring. Go to the truck and remove the elbow from the TB and get out the drill set. Your going to want to drill a hole tward the front of the elbow closets to the air filter, ON THE SIDE, i made the mistake and did it on top and had to buy another elbow... That aside i used a 9/16 drill bit if im not mistaken, and pushed the MAF into the hole. The cuppler will act as a grommit and it stays in there very well with no leaks.

Piecing it back together. Get some assembly lube or what i used was K&N filter oil on a paper towel and get all of my fittings lubed up. double check that there is no debris Assemble the piping in anyway you like, doesnt matter. Plug in the maf, tighten down all of the clamps. Turn it on and BAMM!! saved your self $200+

My current intake filter is a K&N drop in, so in a way this is a complete fully functional cold air intake!

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask

Here are some pics, everyone loves pics

Hey man - it looks good. You put some effort into that and it came out nice. Did you reset the PCM? Can you feel any improvement in throttle response? It looks factory. I say - package it - slap it on Ebay for $149 and start selling 'em. :)

Haha i was thinking about that and putting it on the forums for $75, I noticed it on the freeway when passing, not so much in the city. The original air hat, had atleast 5 air chambers, i have seen the old 5.7 hat and it is nothing compared to this one.. Also according to the EVIC. I did not reset the PCM... Dumb question, how do i do that? And thanks, i was worried it was going to look ghetto.

Unplugged the battery for 1 hr.... I almost feel it lost low end power, and more high end power... idk though

Make sure to reset the PCM. It will relearn the air/fuel ratio and compensate for the increased air volume. I disconnected for 10 minutes. Make sure to drive with steady acceleration while the PCM relearns the new parameters.

Should take a few days and your truck will drive better after it is done.

How does it sound at wide open throttle? Mine still has a lot of resonance with a stage 1 intake on. Might revert to the stock air box and get a drop in filter.

Nice write up!

Was it abs sch40 pipe?

Doesn't really matter. Schedule is the thickness of the outside diameter and the rubber coupling can stretch and compensate for that. You don't want one too thin though. It will be susceptible to heat soak.

Old thread.

Hows this holding up. I've actully done something like this on my S-10. Worked fine but doubt it helped wit that little 4 banger.

My dad just got a 09 4.7 Ram. We planned on getting a Hemi, but both of them sold before we could even go look at it. But this 4.7L is all he needs really for trips to lowes and stuff. He might tow a small boat latter but even then the 4.7L should be fine.

Anyways. I'm always trying to get some more HP just because and $300+ for a intake is crazy. So might end up doing this.

This is my exact build! Awesome! There’s better throttle response and I find it pulls harder in the upper range.

I might try this on my ram 5.7 the rubber hose going to the airbox has a lot of flexible ribbing that slows down airflow. Thanks for the write up.
