With designs on the knob like this. What happens if the truck autoparks? Now you are in park, but the Knob is still turned to the right where drive is.

Yep, impossible to keep it aligned, which is probably why FCA didn't put a design on the stock faceplate.

My truck has never auto parked itself, but couldnt you just dial it back to park, then back to drive without screwing up the clocking of the shifter?

For the factory knob, I think you have to unglue and reseat the decal or the actual face of the knob

For the B&M, the face is attached via a gasket and pressure, so it will turn to realign
Y’all, if the auto park engages, it doesn’t actually turn the knob back to park. It just puts itself into park, but you still have to turn the knob back to park in order to shift out of park.

On mine the knob stays put on drive, just the internal part shifts to park. You can't turn the knob when the engine is off. and when it's started back up on the knob begins from where was. If it had a pointer and was on drive, even though it auto-parked, the next time you start up the pointer would still be on drive and you'd have to turn it clockwise to get to drive. The pointer would then be pointing down to the right.

Well, after reading this, I decided to replicate it myself and of course, I noticed that in mine that after pulling in the driveway it’ll do as you say but my point still stands; as long as you don’t shut the the damn truck off after opening the door activating the Auto Park, it may put itself into park but as long as you turn the dial back to Park before shutting it off, the knob won’t reclock itself.

My problem is I think I had a bad habit in my old Ford of stopping to park, and shutting off the engine with my foot on the brake, before shifting to Park, then hitting the E brake. Done that handful of times in the Ram. Need to hit Park first, then e brake, then shut off the engine.

I didn’t mean to make it sound like i was scoldin’ ya, it just never occurred to me that anyone’d just outta the blue use the Auto Park like it was feature, like the steering wheel buttons, or the heated seats, instead of as a safety feature...lol.

Yeah, when you go wayyyyyy that damn far back. Lol. The ole 08 Ram I had, had an electric shift-on-the-fly dial knob on the dash, pretty much in the same damn spot as the dial shifter for the trans in my new 18.

Guess you don’t approve of the new push-button transfer case gear selector either now, do ya?

Bottom line, console shifters belong in cars.... not trucks.

*Edited to add:*
Figured I’d also mention that the 04 Dakota that the ex wife and I had long ago, also had a dial knob shifter for the transfer case on the dash for it as well.

So see, they been using a dial knob for a gearbox shifter in a truck for as far back at least as 15 years ago.

But what’s next, hate for the dimmer switch now since it’s on the column and hasn’t been on the floor for what, 25-30 years?....lol.

Yes!! It should be on the floor!
In all reality... For me shifter position wouldn't even be an issue if they would offer the 1500 in a 6 spd manual. I hate automatics as much as I do the placement of that damn knob. To each his own.
You've said the shifter on the floor belongs in a car but the knob originated and is still used in CARS! I will continue to hate on it because I can!!!:driver::D

Too funny to me, but heck, I a Boird......

Would luv to go out and Buy me a SRT with 5-6 speed, or a Stang, or Camaro, whatever I could get maxed out with a manual. But that being said, ALAS, look in Bank Account, and that dang period/decimal in checkbook just too far to the LEFT, dang the luck, LOL

Added: Guess I'll just have to be happy on my wing... lol

Well, they’re not even offering the sticks in the HD’s anymore so yer kinda screwed on that deal but unless it’s just personal preference, or in a sports car, I don’t know why the hell anyone would want to sling a gear shift anymore anyways because the reasons to prefer a stick over an auto are pretty much non existent anymore.

I said the shifter on the console(between the seats but whatever) but even cars started out with a column shifter so you can’t really use that to support your argument but if that’s your preference, that’s your preference.

Bottom line, no one’s gonna be happy so, don’t know what to tell ya. If it was still back in the days of the console shifter, it’d be me being you right now and you being me. Lol.

lmao!!! True.... I've always been a manual transmission fan... Automatics are even taking over trucking. I'm a driver and IMO in a tractor you just don't have the same control especially with all the crash mitigation they are instituting. Its always gonna be personal preference though so ...we can agree to disagree.

Every car and truck I owned until 2000 was a stick. I was very reticent to get an auto, but have to admit I love it now. Still have an old '73 Celica 4 speed and enjoy driving it, but in traffic an auto is awesome. Love the 8 speed too! Very smooth shifting.

Yeah, it is. That’s why I’ll stick with my 9-speed Pete. Lol. I dunno, maybe when this trans goes kaput the boss’ll replace it with a 13-speed....[emoji41]

If automatics were a lot more reliable in big trucks- maybe, but naw, I’ll keep my little 379 short-hood as it is. lol.

But- at the end of the day, my dial shifter is quite nice. I don’t mind slingin’ a gearshift throughout the work day but at the end of the day, the gearshifter-slingin’ stays in the truck. Turn the Hemi to “D” and git gone....[emoji3526]

Pretty much me too. My last stick-shift was my 98 halfton, but if it woulda had the 360, I would’ve much more preferred the auto in it.

Which is why I'll drive my W900L for the rest of my career.
600 horsepower and a 13 speed is the only way to fly...

So here it is, best pics I could get of the kind overlay. I like it, quality made and looks real clean. Only issue I has was orientation, after positioning multiple ways I decided straight up in park is the only way it looks good. I really could care less what position it’s in driving as I’m watching the road, not the dash.

You can have mine. Shoot me a PM with your address and I'll get it in the mail. Has a couple of nicks where I removed it, but barely noticable642cabc4c52ea08cb367eb17fc656b0b.jpg

On the fence on these - decal obviously the most cost effective, but orientation is the issue. Good point about aligning in Park though. Anyone got a pic of the "Reverse Color" design the ebay seller mentions for black knobs?

B&M looks OK, but is kinda big and clunky looking imo. A slightly smaller version would be great.

Or just upgrade to the Limited/Laramie billet (is it really aluminum, or plastic?) version - typically about $75 for the module on eBay and could flip it with the old black knob probably to recoup some of the cost.
