Customize Projector Headlights

I ordered some dark smoked clear side markers from Klearz. I guess that means I will eventually be doing this project!

I’m going to lightly tint the DRL’s myself as the klearz set seems a little steep.
I’m trying to decide if I want to go all black on the projector shroud or use a touch of body colour.
Also thinking I might “black chrome” the high beam reflectors. I have powerful hid’s on the low beams so I don’t really ever use the high beams.

If anyone who has done this would like to talk some sense into me, please do!

What are you using to tint the DRLs... Klearz doesnt have the smoke ones in stock anymore.

Most use, including myself rattle can spray paint and have had zero issues

Why type do you all use? I've read that anything between high heat to krylon is being used, but no long term results have been posted.

I used krylon this time because they had a color that was a almost perfect match for my truck. I don't recall what I used on the last set I did. But over a year without a problem on that set. The biggest thing is use a adhesion promoter for plastic. This will help the paint bond with the plastic

Way back when I painted the fender flares of my old Frontier with SEM coat products. Held up for a very long time without issue, truck got totalled but the flare paint was still going.

The only thing I worry about painting inside of headlight stuff is the concentration of the sun (lens effect?) and if the paint would fade or peel because of that. As such, I would try to use the best automotive exterior paint I could find (Im not talking pro level spray only stuff, but something like SEM coat with adhesion promotor would be what I would go for)

paintscratch.com will also custom mix spray cans for your paint code. Not the cheapest in the world but might be worth it depending on your exact color.

I might not be painting anything.

easy off will strip the chrome and then just going to add the smoked lens. (And possibly attempt to tint the DRL’s)

If anything I would go body colour on just part of the shrouds, but these shrouds have a lot going on.

Have I mentioned that I really wish permaseal was never invented? It’s really hurting my confidence to tackle this. The fact that I have the 15+ model makes it the worst of the worst too.

I suppose if I **** the bed I can get some Morimoto XB’s but I don’t really want to drop over $2k CAD on lights.
Especially because I really do like these projector style lights... just needs the mods metioned above to turn like into love!

It's really not that bad to open a set. First one will be the slowest if it's your first time. Second one is a breeze because you have a better idea of what you are doing. I would say if you have a heat gun have that handy. It'll save you from having to put the housing back into the oven to warm the permaseal back up while you're trying to open them

I just took apart a set of the ModifyStreet 2019 look headlights and noticed that I probably could have done fine with the heat gun. I actually started to and even after only a couple minutes with the gun at 300 F, the seam was starting to soften enough in areas to get a small flat blade in there and pry apart a bit.

My only worry with the heat gun is that by the time I get EVERYTHING heated, some parts of it would start to cool. I ended up just baking them instead and that worked fine too.

Let me give you a huge tip from someone who has smoked a ton of these DRL lenses.... Use VHT night shades and spray the INSIDE of the DRL lenses. DO NOT spray the outside, as it will end up drying to a matte black spray paint type finish and look terrible. If you spray the inside of the DRL lense, you get the smoked color/effect plus you get the smooth oem finish of the outside of the lense. It looks like it’s stock/Klearz quality when you tint the inside of the DRL lense.

I repeat this until I get back around to the first spot I did. Once I’m here, the headlight just pulls apart. You need to make sure that the inner part of the clear lense has separate from the black housing section, or it won’t pull apart. I also have a few other tools I use as well, if the headlight is giving me trouble I wedge a few U shaped clips I have into the seam and then prey it apart.

I’ve painted countless sets of Ram headlights and I always use Duplicolor spray paint, as they offer paint code color match in a spray can for $8 at my local pep boys. So I can get any OEM Ram (Chrysler) color in spray can form. So it’s super easy to paint any headlight parts I need. Always comes out looking perfect as long as you prep properly, primer, paint and clear.

Thanks. Which boards are the uppers and which are the lower boards?

Do you happen to have any pictures of the DRL boards when they were mounted inside the housing? I want to see what they look like and what the mounting area looks like. I’ve been thinking about doing a project but needed to see what the insides look like before I start buying parts. Thanks.

Oh and any pictures of the projector mounts?
