I am wondering who here has opened up their headlights?
I would like to do smoked side markers and black out the projector shrouds.
How scary is it?
Post some pics and show off!

It's easy.

I Plasti dipped my inserts. The only problem I had is that I sealed them too early . I developed a dog on the inside of my lenses

I am heavily considering it Morimoto make some awesome projector retrofits, and it appears to be a significant difference with the H.I.D's, halo's as well it doesn't look too difficult and they offer a re-seal kit which would definitely make them waterproofer again

I've wanted to do this forever, I'm just not sure how to get the paint to really work on the chrome bezel. Otherwise I would have opened them by now. I wish they just sold black bezels we could buy for these.

It's easy to remove the chrome of the bezels. Use oven cleaner. Within 20 minutes the chrome is gone. Then you are left with just the black plastic which as long as no chrome is left really could just be left as is.

Opening headlights is a little nerve racking. Some pop right open and others put up a fight. Plenty of how too's on here and YouTube to walk you through the process. Just take your time move slow but fast and they'll come apart. Get some butyl tape from the retrofit source ($~15 for a roll) to reseal them.

I don't have a finished pic of my headlights yet, I just finished mine. Color matched and added a few things to a set of the 2019 style alpharex/modifystreet projector headlights. Going to install them tonight, weather permitting. Here are a few pics during the process

This is what I started with

I wanted to upgrade the lows but just couldn't get myself to drop ~$350 on projectors/hid's kit or morimoto MLED projectors right now

I don't remember where I had heard about that but I tried it a few years ago when I painted a set of oem projectors and it worked and did it again on my current set of lights

Worst part isnt opening them up its a little daunting but with the right tools and keeping them at the right temp you can get them apart without destroying them.

Worst part is trying to get all the old permaseal out of the channels so when you go to put it back together you dont have any leaks.

Aftermarket headlights like TYC are much easier to open that the OEMs and honestly best to take your time when pulling them open its not a start in the morning finished by dinner job unless you have done it handful of times already.

If you do go retrofit also look at alfaobd and enable HID lights that way you can skip harness and resistors. Even with the morimoto 15+ elite kit I still had bulb out warning even though it still worked. Once I set that in alpha I yanked out all the harness and resistors and no more error lights. Plus 2 less components to fail since your factory low beam will plug into the ballast and new low beam bulb into the other side of it thats it.

Heres an output of mine as well running the 55w kit from morimoto with d2s 4.0 projectors.

Nice! I did a retrofit with the mini d2s in my ...ahem... ford limited. I used aftermarket lights for that reason.

I really do like these ram stock enclosures, just want to black it out a bit more. Thanks for your advice! I don’t think I’m going to attempt it on these. I hate when condensation gets in the lights and it’s bound to happen when if I do it.

I have the plug and play GTR 55watts 6000k for my current projectors and they throw out pretty good light and look great with my Xb fogs :)

What kind of cleaner are you using. I just tried easy off and then super clean on the chrome emblem and nothing came off.

Easy off I believe. I'll double check. How long did you let it set on them

Part of me wants to buy all the stuff to do this, but I see a lot of guys tossing their Gen4s for the Gen5.. with my luck I'd go through the trouble of it, and then someone would sell them used. One thing I do wanna use tho is the smoked out clear corner and parking/turn signal lights from Klearz. 200 seems steep but it looks amazing:

They do look nice compared to tinting the orange one's. But yeah $200 is pricey for clear plastic.

This is what I used

1500 RAM12. Please, please, please post "done!" pics and/ or video. I was hoping someone would go this route. I don't really want to start another project.. Lord knows I have too many unfinished ones laying about... but I definitely don't want to drop $1300 on some look good headlights AND be unhappy (at that point it wouldn't be the price.. I knew what they were when I bought) but rather i'd feel I got WAYYYyyyy less than what I paid for.. and that would irk me to no end. If you can put together something that comes close but works right... i'm ahead of the game and if it is more affordable... all the more better, lol ;)

I'm in the process also... Mine are 2 tone though. And hid's instead of led's.
