Differences in 6'4" (6 foot 4 inch) bed between 5th gen 1500 and 2500
I bought the RSI SmartCap for my 2021 5th gen 1500 with 6'4" bed. I decided to sell it and had a number of persons with 5th gen 2500 trucks with 6"4" bed interested. RSI states there are slight differences in the tops between the two trucks but could not tell me what those differences were. I have finally moved the top to a 2500 and what we found out was it will fit the 2500. The only issue, if you call it that, is the 2500 bed gets slightly wider on the inside measurements at the top rail. Starting at the tailgate the top rail is the same inside width as the 1500 and the top fits fine. As you move towards the cab the inside width gets slightly wider at about 2 inches wider at that back of the cab (Bulkhead measurement). The top fits but we had to adjust the shallow clamps at the cab end of the bed to get them to work. Not a big deal but there is a "slight difference". Overall the top made for the 1500 fits the 2500 fine. Covers all sides, seals have good contact and no leaks.
My opinion is that toppers for the 5th gen 1500 6'4" bed will fit the 2500 but not the other way around. I do not think a 2500 topper would fit the 1500.
The top kinda looked undersized for my 1500 and I think it looks undersized for a 2500 as well. Not terrible looking but something that bothered me enough to start looking for a steamlined fiberglass topper.
I searched online and could not find this information so I hope it helps someone here.
