Ok, so I started this project kinda wanting to create a new idea. Instead of going out the bottom of the air box with a 3" pvc or flex hose, I have all the piping and hardware to go out the front of the box, angled down, then angled again directly either behind the bumper to just get cold air, or I can angle again slightly, and run it to a 4" collector, which will have it's own hole in the plastic underneath the front bumper, below the fog lights, which would create ram air. I know 2" piping isn't the biggest, but it's what fits out the front of the box with no issues. I also figured if I ran it to the curved black plastic under the bumper with the 4" collector, that should cram a lot of air, and since it wouldn't be facing straight forward, I shouldn't have to worry about too much water getting in it. So here's my questions:

What do you think of the idea?

If I do the ram air, should I take off the snorkel and close that old opening, so it's not losing pressure from the ram air tube?

Open to any suggestions.

I think you're in WAY over your head man. :)

I'm kidding. Sounds like you got it figured out. Do you think it's going to pick up that much air? Or, do you feel like it's worth cutting into the box to see? Could you mock it up frankenstein style and go around the box just to see if it runs or feels better? Then if doesn't you haven't cut up your box.

Well, I've committed to my 2 inch idea, and the inlet for now will be sitting right behind the fog light area with a street elbow to face it towards the front so my truck won't throw mud into it, and it won't catch road spray. I'm taking a bunch of pictures and will do a write up. The way I'm doing it could also very easily be made into ram air by doing a 2 to 4 inch collector in the right location. Doing this mostly just to get cooler air away from the engine, and away from the fender. From what I've read, lots of people get results from a similar mod.

This is also why I'm wondering if I removed the snorkel and closed that hole, if that would force it to get the cooler air from down below. Only concern I have is if 2" pipe would be big enough if I didn't that.

A 2" inlet tube is going to bring some cooler air to the filter, but it is not going to create a ram air effect. If you want to run it forward, many guys have simply relocated the coolant overflow bottle, and mounted a 4" scoop in the plastic insert behind the grille. That is what I would do as that will give you a true ram air effect.

How do you do that? Where would the scoop go? I could probably rig that up with some of the stuff I have.

Nevermind, that looks like a big task. I think for now I will route it so the collector sits basically flush with the back side of the plastic deflector below the bumper. Hoping the air rushing below the deflector will get sucked in the collector, creating somewhat of a ram air, without losing clearance. Do you think water would be an issue?

Unless the scoop is bigger than the 3.5" throttle body opening and faces the front of the truck, it isn't going to show any measurable gains in hp. We have tested the S&B scoop which is much larger than 2", and it did not show any increase in performance at the dragstrip. It also faces down instead of forward.

Running a ram air tube to the grille is not too difficult. You will need to get an aftermarket coolant overflow bottle to make it work, but aside from pulling air through an open hood scoop, or mounting a front facing scoop in/under the bumper, it is the only way this mod will work the way you are expecting it to.

Here's how I did mine, and yes, it is a big task, but works great.

Notice I moved my coolant tank to the side as mentioned.

I wound up running it right behind the plastic below the bumper with a 4 inch collector on 2 inch pipe and I can definitely tell a difference. I've taken a bunch of pictures, and will do a write up.

What I've noticed, is it seemed to make the biggest difference in the city, as opposed to the highway. I'm going to modify it a bit more today.

My city mpg is barely going below 20,and with my lift, gears, and tires I'd say that's a big improvement over like 13 mpg Aug.

620pac -

What were you getting around town MPG before the custom air box mod?

I see your tuned and what about the gears? Did you change them? Or what gear are you running?

20 mpg. Jesus H. Are you sure? You're not resetting it at 45mph are you? :)
