Anyone have any experience with a quality dump trailer? Curious to hear some real world feed back. I am looking at getting into junk/ trash removal.

Considering this one:

How do you think my truck will do? Seems like an HD will be on the horizon maybe. 2014 Ram 1500 8 speed 5.7 3.92 max tow package.

Curious to hear any and all feedback :) thank you

I think a 2500 would be a better choice to tow that trailer. Dump trailers are extremely Heavy when loaded.

If you load this correctly and don't approach it's full capacity, your truck should be able to move it around fairly well, since you've got the 5.7 and 3.92 gears. That said, you won't be legal at that trailer's max capacity, and at its full capacity (because those can usually hold 14k+ lbs), you're going to struggle with it.

In short, it will get your foot in the door doing smaller jobs, that might be a good way to put up enough cash to get into that HD that will unlock the rest of the trailer's potential.

Caution---Crazy California Law I ran into when purchasing an open car trailer:
You must not enter a public road with a trailer attached to a vehicle that is not rated at least to tow the fully rated capacity (GTRW?) of the trailer.
My old 2001 Dodge Ram was rated to tow 7,600#. A "regular" car trailer is rated for a maximum combined trailer weight of 7,000#. The next step up car trailer which I was thinking might be wise since it was heavier-duty and might last longer, was rated at 9,990#, just under the 10,000# limit requiring a CDL.
I was told that it would be illegal to tow the bigger trailer with my truck on a public road---EVEN IF IT WAS EMPTY. I thought that was BS so I went over to the CHP office and asked a Trooper who concurred. Chances are small of being stopped but you could be cited and not even be able to tow it home. Insurance coverage may also be at risk if any accident occurred and you could be found at fault even if it wasn't really your fault.
I'm just the messenger, I didn't make the rule, just sharing what I was told here. :banghead:

There's caveats everywhere. OP, this is also something to look into - local laws can sometimes be a *****. This wouldn't be a problem in my state.

I found that a 1/2 ton truck does well enough with a brake controller pulling a loaded 6x10 dump trailer and it all at max towing capacity, but I dont like to run max all the time.Anything larger than a 6x10 is pretty heavy by itself and loaded you need a 3/4 ton truck, or being in the trucking business, even larger if you really want to do it easily, safer and also have larger brakes involved in it. Next time it'll be a 6x12 dump with a 3/4 ton truck tho.My 6x10 dump weighed about 1500 to 1600 pounds empty

I concur, if you are using this for business purposes, have the right equipment. When I have seen contractors with rear sagging, trailers scraping the ground, or just anything in general that looks less than professional, I won't consider them. If tools are substandard then that possibly speaks to that person's thoughts in other aspects of their work. And yes, I worked as a contractor and knew if I couldn't afford the right tools then that job wasn't for me.

To help, you may want to consider a lease to break into the business for both truck and trailer. You can deduct expenses from your taxes, and it might be more economical to start that route than laying out big bucks up front. Also, I used to rent a lot of equipment and once I established myself with a rental center they gave me some deals in things like lower costs, weekends with a holiday for free, etc. In turn I sent other people to them. Good luck with your business venture!

I have a 7x12 14000(aprox) gross that I use around the ranch that is 7000 dry. It is an Iron Bull and has a roller tarp cover. It is a well built trailer and has held up well in spite of the fact that when I haul crushed rock it is loaded to about 4000 over gross at times, but I only have a couple of miles to go. I usually us an older F250, but have used my Ram a time or two when hauling at or below max with no problem, but don't like to. The weight is a lot for a 5600 lb truck. Just remember the gross, and the amount of work you will actually be able to do with a trailer the Ram 1500 can safely handle on public roads and think about moving up to a 2500.

All great points above. Thank you. Much appreciated.

I found this company about an hour from my house. They have a 8x10x4 (a hair under 12 cubic yards) with dual 3,5000lbs axels and two year warranty. Not too many specs on the website but I am considering calling and talking to a sales rep.

Here is a link to the site:

Also, from Ram, my trucks payload (1450lbs)/ towing (10,000lbs) numbers:

https://www.ramtruck.ca/en_dir/pdf/towing_1500.pdf

Unfortunately, I think I have to call for trailer specs because I cannot find them on the site.

I think the price is good. It is very entry level and hoping to expand from here. A more heavy duty larger truck and trailer would be sweet. But, I am going to use my 1/2 ton to get things going with smaller residential jobs. I will need a more purposeful set up to land professional jobs with the big boys. I hoping that is on the horizon for me.

For a dump any larger than this it really should have dual hydraulic cylinders.Looks like a good price no doubt

Good price for a HIGH side model, must have SHORT side so U do not over fill it.

Load can ne be over the rails period dot in most state and U HVE TO TARP IT.

Laws are insane state to state, I live close to 3 states so have to know laws in three states.

I ALWAYS tell folks, get trailer and truck weighed and certified so U know before u load.

Max load in Idaho is 8000 lbs over U need a special plate with the T on it.

Here they kinda give a break if U REALLY know the weights before hand and will WEIGH U on the side of the road !! No **** !!!

Can go on and on what ALSO has to be done, its crazy.

commercial is even more insane, so U snow plow folks fall under that law btw !!

The MAX I can weigh in IDAHO is 8000 lbs with the passenger license plate.

I have PAY more for a truck plate to haul over 8000. So it not like the old day hook up what ever and if it pulls it your good !!!

most truck stops have certified weigh scale, knowing how much u can add safely so not to hurt U or others when u scream down the hill with no brakes !! LOL

Just the BS I have to deal with in idaho, your state could be better or worse !!

My buddy has the Bigtex 90sr tandem and loves it. He's in construction/renovation and (over)loads the hell out of it regularly. He pulls it with an HD truck, which handles the loaded trailer very well, including dragging it off muddy job sites.

I've got a 6x12 sure trac dump with the telescopic ram. 9900# gvw. Very well built trailer that I am certainly not afraid to overload. When I bought it I was towing with a 05 gmc sierra 1500 z71, and it definitely struggled even with only 3yds of topsoil. Now I tow with a 15 Ram 2500 crew cab 6.4 with 4.10 gears. This thing is a beast! Had a 5.8 ton load of crusher run stone that felt like it wasn't even there. The trailer handled well, and the telescopic ram dumped it without even a struggle. I'm actually thinking of upgrading to a larger sure trac trailer with a gooseneck since I've got the bigger truck.

Look at PJ trailers. I have a 14,000 dump with the double back doors that either swing open or you can chain them and have it open the whole width to spread the gravel. I also got the remote so you can dump and drive for spreading. It is a 14 ft so it hauls 5 ton. I know my 2500 6.7 hauls it up the 7% grade no problem. I would be thinking it would be a chore to haul that much with your current truck.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PULL A DUAL WHEELED DUMP TRAILER WITH A 1500! The brakes are not rated, the hitch is not rated, your tranny is not rated, your tires are not rated. You screw up and get in a wreck and you are on your own... Insurance will not cover you..... Buy a 2500! It’s a great truck!

Thanks for the responses. All great replies.

I am most likely going to buy the above “Ski Trailer.” For a variety of reasons. Main one being cost. Seems very budget friendly. I will just watch the weight being towed and stay within my trucks limits.

If things go well for me then I will upgrade to a nice used gas HD truck.

I am thinking of adding this to my truck:
f925d9e8bc9046f839d3007a31a65cbd.jpg

https://www.airliftcompany.com/shop/93365/

Obviously my truck’s factory tow/ payload ratings still apply and are not changed. This just helps alleviate some squat and might improve ride a bit while working. Especially since some of my payload is effected by my LEER shell. Opinions? Thoughts? Thank you.

I really liked your post. Been reading it a few times over the last few days. I am researching the tax incentives. It is a lot of reading and there is conflicting info on it. I am hoping to get clarity when I sit down with my tax guy at the end of the month.

If all goes well this year, then a leased truck is in the cards. Trailer too. Seems like a good opportunity with tax savings. I just want to make sure I go about it right. Going to be some trail and error going down in 2021. With some hard work too. Hoping to have things running smoothly by 2022.
