I live in Suburban Chicago (Crook County) and I found a 2014 Ram 1500 with the 3.0 diesel engine. The DEF system was removed. Is there an emissions test requirement for diesel vehicles? I ran a check with my OBD scanner (BlueDriver) and no fault codes popped up.

Assuming you mean Cook county, from what I've seen all areas of Cook county require emissions testing for vehicles four years and older. I wouldn't buy that truck if you live in Cook county.

Search around before buying an eco diesel. Look at EGR cooler issues and everything else. You usually need an emissions to transfer vehicle, check local rules on that.

This is what ai says...In Illinois, diesel vehicles are generally exempt from emissions testing, including when transferring ownership.

but like above check cook county specifically.

I wouldn't spend any hard earned money on an eco diesel

I’d have to agree with you Rick. I owned a 2015 with the ecodiesel. I was happy with the fuel economy but the anxiety of seeing others around me with engine failures I ended up only keeping it for about six months. I traded it in on a 2017 Rebel with a Hemi and I was much happier.

@IronHorseDriver if you do buy an ecodiesel I highly suggest you stay away from any forums which discuss that engine. I think I would have been happier if I wouldn’t have joined a Ram ecodiesel forum lol.

eco diesel old / now Hemi missing the eco's mileage/ now back to enjoying diesel torqueesel
I enjoyed my 2015 with the eco-diesel, I did trade it in on my current 2019 Hemi. I traded with 96,000+ miles on her. The nice smooth low end torque and driveability was great and untill the emission update the mileage was great. I would consider another one.
