Greetings all. First time here.

I have a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 with a cylinder 5 misfire, which happens around 3k rpm. Notified by a flashing engine light which will go away. If I left off and let it settle it’ll stop. The misfire with sometimes cause multiple misfires and the engine with shake. When this happens the engine light stays on.

I hear a slight tap noise.

Idle is fine, cruise is fine.

I have replaced coil pack and both plugs on that cylinder. Replaced cam shaft position sensor and still the same.

Dealer tested all electrical and claims a pressure test.

They claim it’s a collapsed lifter that is eaten the cam shaft on lobe 5. Extremely expansive... and I don’t trust them.

If you don’t trust them pull the top end off, yank the junk and put new not junk in. use a torque wrench.

And lube. Never forget the lube.

Common issue with ram, they are very likely right. Run a compression test on the cylinders.

It happens here weekly.

This is a new common issue appearing among Hemi's as of late.

They may be correct in what they are telling you.

If this is becoming common on hemis then shouldn’t a recall be figured out? They issued one for something as small as the gas tank bracket.

I believe they ran a compression test, and I checked the valve springs for cracks. Seems odd that it’s only at high rpm

Recalls are safety related. If your gas tank falls down while driving it could catch fire.

If your cam gets eaten alive the engine just dies. I'll try to find the long thread of people that have delt with this but others may find it before me.

They are not going to issue a recall, it would cost them way too many dollars.

As others said, bad lifter and wiped cap is likely the cause. Don't go to dealer to repair this if you're out of warranty, find a reputable local shop that did this kind of work on hemi..you'll save money and likely get better quality.

We've had a few good topics here in the past few weeks.. Read through these to get more info: https://www.ramforum.com/threads/2013-5-7l-hemi-cam-is-failing.131292/#post-1878286

103k miles MuskyMike.

And sounds like everyone is in agreance on this. Issue I’m having is finding a non dealer that will take the time out of their schedules to dedicate 15 hours+ to a single vehicle.

Will keep searching for one.

I’m out of the Clarkston Michigan area if anyone’s has a recommendation.
