Engine oil over full??

Just bought a 2018 Power Wagon last month. I checked the oil today and seems to be over full. Not a whole lot but I’d say a good 1/4 to 1/2 quart over. Only has 2k miles on it. What gives? Should I drain some? Also with this being a left over 18 I’m wondering how long the factory oil has been in it and if I should just go ahead a change it?

My 6.4 always reads “over” a little when i do a change with the required 7 quarts. As long as its not WAY up the dip stick you are fine.

After the truck has run up to full operating temperature pull the dipstick and see if it’s covered in foam. If so you are definitely over full.

Go by the manual and put in the listed amount. After the first change scribe the dipstick with a center punch or a knife to mark the true level. Mine was a good bit above the full mark when I purchased it and when I put in exactly 7 quarts. I use the big filter but I don't think that would be more than a few ounces difference. Don't drain it. Changing it now is ok but has nothing to do with sitting on the lot.

Look on the door sticker, it should show when the truck was built. You can figure the engine w/oil was probably built within a month of that date. If it's getting close to a year then change it.

Honestly that’s what I was thinking about although it seems normal that they read a little high. I’m not a big fan of changing the break in oil right away and I’d like to run it to at least 5k. I just don’t know how I feel with the oil being about a year old.

There is no break in oil, just regular Pennzoil. It's not a Ferrari.

My 6.4 had several oil changes by 5k as did my 5.7... No one uses break in oil anymore across any of the mass produced stuff. I typically do 500/1000/1500/2500/5000, but then again my 6.4 gets driven like I stole it. Most of the guys I know that either did their own performance builds or do performance builds go by the change early and change often montra. Any new engine, no matter how well clearanced, will shed wear metals into the oil early in its life as things mate up. The full flow filter, no matter how good, will not catch all of the microscopic particles which can accelerate wear. Some think this helps the break-in, but those particles don't care where they cause wear and may cause wear in areas that are already nicely mated up. Once an engine is nice and broken in then you can start extending out the OCI as the wear between moving parts drops off substantially.
