Hey guys i got aan 06 ram 4.7. My problem has been going on for a couple years now gone to 3 mechanics and they still havent been able to figure it out. After start up and let idle and warm up all good switch to reverse or drive step on gas and then it happens. Seems like the enging just quits. Give like 5-10 seconds with foot on gas and it comes back on and dirves normal till you park shut off truck and start it again then it returns and does it again. This only happens when the truck is started every time.
What you all think? Truck has 320,000 miles on it cats havent been changed no error codes

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. If it were the cats, I'd think it would do it all the time. At 320k she's probably tired. Have you done a compression test? Might need to get good and hot before it has good compression. Does it smoke when it's first started or cold?

Yes JohnnyMac it lets out 1 small puff of smoke when first started. But it has done this since around 120k You start it up put it in gear and step on the accelerator and it completely feels like the enginge is off . peddle mashed to the floor and nothing than all of a sudden it comes to life and your off. It is truly mind boggling .

Its hard to describe what it does. Once it gets pass the what i want to call it dying out it runs great hauls butt uphills and what no rough idle hesitation or anything but the moment you turn it off go into a store and come back out and start it and put in gear it does it again . It only does this when you start it up and put in gear and go. Hope this makes sense. All new coils and plugs.

It may be the crank position sensor failing and this is a cheap repair.

Bump

Since this last time i have posted about this i have not found the issue any insight would help out. So an update . The engine has a fresh rebuild along with the transmission. New fuel pump, coils, plugs etc..... No cats on it anymore... Still seems to die ( not really die just not responding ) after being driven and parked for about 30min and then restarted (no problem there) the put in gear and will drive about 100 ft and then no power while the pedal is depressed . After a couple seconds (which seems like forever it takes off ) all good until you park and do it all over again. Doesnt happen all the time though.. Thanks in advance

No idiot lights, had a scoped by mechanic and it’s not showing any codes.
Annoying

Have the O2 sensors been changed? if they're over a 100K then you might want to replace them.

Is there a fuel pressure regulator or is the pressure regulated in the tank? Could be the regulator sticking? Maybe try checking fuel pressure to see if it’s dropping. And as stated if the o2 sensors have not been changed it would be a good idea to do that. Is the throttle electronic or cable driven on that truck?

I think this is your throttle position sensor. Also, put an actual vacuum gauge on it and monitor your vacuum when this happens.

I believe the pressure is regulated in the tank. throttle is cable driven. It has a new tps in it as well. I will check the fuel pressure to see if its dropping. thanks for the advice.

Hopefully, you used OE sensors. these trucks are picky when it comes to sensors.

No to sound like an idiot but how do i go about doing that putting a vacuum guage on it while it is being driven to monitor it.

No i didn't use OE sensors and the O2 sensors havent been changed yet for the reason the mechanic said they werent throwing any codes but i have had my doubts ..

I had them use their diagnostic tool, and it showed that my ESIM was failing. I had them install a new one along with the gasket ($300 parts and labor at non dealer) and all of the codes are now gone. I’ve been driving it for about two weeks. The loose gas cap image on my dashboard finally is gone too.
Crossing my fingers.
