Hi all,
I have a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7L Big Horn Crew Cab with an 8HP70 transmission. The current engine and transmission have 280k on them, and I just developed the lifter/cam issue. Transmission is also at the end of its service life. Not complaining, as it seems to be a fair amount of miles before my first major issue. I have purchased a lift-out from a 2017 model that includes a 5.7L engine, 8HP transmission, wiring harness, and ECM. My question is, should I get the lift bar to pull the old motor and transmission and set the new ones, or a lift plate? I know it will be around 800lbs together and want to make sure Im not damaging anything on the way out or back in.

Any advice on what to watch out for, or in general, is appreciated.

Are you wanting the 2017 wiring harness and ECM? Your 2014 setup will run that engine just fine and you won't have to worry about flashing the 2017 PCM to your truck.

I just pulled the 14 engine this weekend and getting ready to install the 17.

So, just reuse my 2014 PCM and it should be fine?

I have AlphOBD if needed, can I code the new 2017 PCM to the truck or is that a PIA and just use the 2014's

It's the same engine and trans, don't overthink it. Install, plug it in. Worst case scenario you may have to swap sensors from your '14 to the '17 due to harness variations. No electronic foolery required.

Sounds like a good weekend of fun... and cold liquid wrench, too!
Keep us posted o your progress and lots of pics as well :)

On the new-to-your-truck 17' swap in I'd be considering:
- check the water pump, idler and tensioner pulleys for play - replace what is needed and the belt, too
- clean the PCV valve or replace it altogether
- remove the throttle body and thoroughly clean it (new gasket/seals)
- remove the intake plenum and thoroughly clean it (new gasket/seals)
- replace the spark plugs
- perform a transmission service (either use the OEM pan/filter kit or go to the PPE pan with replaceable filter) - only MOPAR OEM or Valvoline MaxLife ATF
- good time to also install the @caulk04 8spd transmission cooler bypass valve and drop those trans temps by up to 30 deg/c and engine temps by 3 to 5 deg/c
- coolant flush & fill - MOPAR 50/50 premixed or MOPAR concentrated with distilled water at 50/50 ratio
- perhaps a new t-stat, too??
- check those exhaust manifolds for cracking / cracked bolts or leaks and address if required
- when was your last differential (front & rear) service, and transfer case service - maybe you do it now as well?

Don't throw out your old transmission, until you've got it back up and running, and have put a few miles on it.You just might have to swap the transmissions original TCM into your replacement transmission.Sometimes you get lucky, but there's also a few guys who've had to swap in their earlier 13/14 TCMs into the later 8 speed. There was a change in TCM programming between 14 and 15.

Hawk has a good write up on his swap here.

Engine has been installed and test drove on highway. I ended up leaving the 17's wiring harness on the new motor and using the ECM/PCU from that new motor. Used Alfa to re-VIN ECM and used "new motor" option on Engine tab and all works with a few hiccups.

First and the one that concerns me most is I am getting P025A and U0109 after some research I don't have that module on my 14' and assume the original PCM is looking for it, yet the truck so far runs fine.

The second is P562 but that occurs on highway after giving it some juice, I'm assuming it might be a loose connection or pin in the harness and am currently tracking it down but its only happened twice and is intermittent.

Is there an advantage MPG or otherwise to going out and getting the module harness and pump that its looking for? If so can anyone tell me the rear wiring harness needed? The pump and module I can figure out the harness much harder due to the ****** wiring diagrams mopar puts out. Is there a way to tell the PCM I have the 14' pump not the 17's set up? and lastly its running should I be concerned or is the 14's pump doing its job regardless?

Transmission seems to be working fine as well.
The only other issue was ordering the correct cooling lines as the 17' doesn't use the 3 way Aux pump / diverter and had the oil cooler.

Just replaced my 5.7L with a new zero mile hemi from Benny @AllMoparParts.com. Have everything ready with the exception of one hose. Can anyone tell me what to connect this one to? I may even have it on the wrong side of the engine.

thanks in advance!

It doesn't connect to anything,it's the transmission breather tube,it just lays right where you have it,as Daw stated

Transmission or front diff breather, attach as high as you can get it.
Thanks for the quick response!

One last mystery item. Any ideas where this bracket belongs?

Did you get all the brackets bolted back onto the bellhousing,as i seem to remember one like that, that bolts to the bellhousing and holds some of the transmissions wiring

This picture is courtesy of @16WhiteQC from his 6.4 manifold swap thread. There's a bracket on the front of the 5th Gen intakes ,that looks like your bracket.

And for the guys who think they need a bigger throttle body, that 251 throttle body is the exact same throttle body used on the 485 horse 6.4's,and even on them,it's still one of the last upgrades you do,usually after cam / long tubes etc. So anybody thinking their stock throttle body is to small, for a cammed/long tubed 5.7,it's not :waytogo:
