Alright so I need new exhaust. I'm going to replace from the header back. But other than that I really don't know much. I need you guys' help to figure out a good cat, muffler, and piping to use. I'm looking for something pretty damn loud, but not so loud I get pulled over or annoy people. My truck currently has a cat back exhaust that splits at the muffler to duals with 3 inch tips. I don't know what kind of muffler it has though (I'm not huge on exhaust and it was on the truck when I got it ). It would help a lot of someone could tell me what kind it is (pictures attached) Thanks in advance

Cherry Bomb Extreme/FM 10 would be pretty damn loud.

Looks like you've got some FM knockoff on there currently.

No need to do headers back unless you're going with longtubes. The exhaust from the cat back is actually pretty good stock, the major bottleneck is the factory y-pipe, though being that you have an 00 you should have the slightly larger y-pipe.

Yeah with headers back I meant after the headers sorry. Nearly all of my exhaust has mud baked on to it. It's pretty terrible. And I don't have the time to get underneath it with a wire brush for hours.
But as far as muffler I was thinking about a 10. I was going to do a Cherry Bomb Extreme until my dad told me he would help me pay for it as long as it wasn't a CB (I'm currently unemployed so I'm going to take all the help I can get haha). What about Magnaflow? I forgot to research them but I've heard they're more expensive. Is it worth the money?

The FM 10 and the CB Extreme are pretty much the same muffler. Your dad is likely thinking of the Cherry Bomb glasspacks of the 60s and 70s. lol

You've gotta remember that most of the stock exhaust system is stainless steel, so replacing the entire exhaust with anything less is gonna result in less service life down the road. Magnaflow mufflers are good, but they're pricey because they're made of....you guessed it...stainless steel.

Yeah I tried telling him that but he kept going on about how they're all glasspacks and they're **** and yeah just a whole bunch of BS. But anyways what about a cat? I know nearly nothing about them lol. And mine I believe is coming apart from the inside. Or the muffler not sure which

Just show him the website. lol

If your cat is coming apart, it's gonna clog soon and you need to replace it. I would advise you just replace it. You can get Magnaflow Direct-fit replacement cats/y-pipes from Summit and they replace the cat and the ****** factory y-pipe. However, if you don't have the 2-into-1 cat, you can just hack your cat off and weld a single in/out cat in its place.

You can test to see if the cat is rattling by take a rubber mallet and smacking the side of it a couple times, then do the same thing with the muffler, that will tell you where the noise is coming from.

I'm probably going to replace the entire system anyways. My truck has had a rough life from the previous owners. If either of those are fine at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if I have problems with them before long. But you think Magnaflow is best for a cat ? Also how big should I do my piping? 2.5 inches? 3?

The Maggys are good cats, I personally got a cheap Marlco (or whatever) branded cat from Amazon. Just a cheap OEM replacement.

You need to figure out what exhaust setup you have before proceeding in that direction though.

The single 2.5 inch isn't bad. If you're going to go with some major engine mods in the near future, you'd need long tubes and 3 inch pipe for a single. Since you're still running a relatively stock engine, I'd just run a 2.5 inch single for simplicity and then go to 2.25 in duals off that.

I probably won't mod it much. Probably no more than I have actually. Just focus on the Nova. But thanks a ton for the help man.

Agree with DD94 Id get a magnaflow direct fit cat , 2.5" pipe cat back and a 14" magnaflow. That would sound good.

Edit: I have a cherry bomb vortex muffler and it is just a little louder then a stock muffler.

2.5 from the cat back, then 3in tail pipe after the muffler.

Depends on the year. The 2000+ trucks had a better y-pipe than the 99- trucks. My truck has a 2 inch (I believe that's what it is) crush-bent y-pipe going into a 2-into-1 cat. I think your truck should have 2.25in pipes converging into a single 2.5in Y right before a 2.5in single in/out cat.

If you've got the good y-pipe you don't need bigger piping for a stock engine.

A route you could go is shorty headers with an Off Road Y-pipe replacing your stocker.

I know I don't need it. Just figured it may give me a deeper sound. Since I most likely will replace my piping anyways.

You can get a deeper note by going with a larger pipe off the muffler on the back end. The muffler will provide the backpressure you need so as to not **** off the engine too much.

Why so hung up on converters? Do you really need them where you live? If you have no inspection or emissions test where you live, why not go with true duals and 2" pipe, one exhaust hooked to each header, and magnaflow 2" in/out universal straight through mufflers, either 14" or 18" depending on how loud you want it. (the larger ones will be less loud) These will give you a nice aggressive tone without being too loud, and since they are straight through like a glasspack, will give you no backpressure. All a cat will do is make you lose horsepower and fuel economy if you don't need one to pass emissions. The first mod I made on my 98 ram when I bought it new was headers and true 2" duals with no mufflers or converters, and a dyno test conformed an increase in both horsepower & torque.
