New to the forum here in Sask, Canada, driving a '16 1500 Laramie. Forgot to lock up the other night some punks cleaned out my loose change and some expensive sunglasses. I know for a fact that a month back, when I tried to go to my truck without the key fob, the alarm went off. Now I'm at the point where I am following the instructions in the O/M and I can't seem to arm the factory alarm. Advice anyone?

hit the lock button and you've armed the 'factory alarm'. if you dont lock the truck, it wont arm.

There is an option in your settings where the truck will arm its self after a few minutes. Mine does it all the time, and I love it because I space out.

Interested to know this as well! I haven't seen this option.

Will the doors lock with the fob inside using the delayed setting?

I am not sure exactly what option it is, or what models support it. I have a Laramie with the 8.4N. I can look tonight.

Alarm on door opened with key

It makes nooo sense to me that by using the emergency key to unlock the door the alarm will sound when the door is opened.

This is totally ignored in the User Guide.

If you don't have your fob, or if it's battery is dead, you are screwed.

if you do that and then put the key in the ignition and turn it to start it does the alarm go off?

I will be getting on of there products, no question, when I am ready. probably be a while though.

https://www.viper.com/

What is the price for a simple one installed? I see that Best Buy can install them.

Viper Entry Level 1-Way Security System

https://www.viper.com/car/build/

Do you have to carry 2 key fobs now? One for the Viper and the one provided by Ram?
What does the Viper do that the factory alarm does not do?

This is from the 2016 Ram manual

VEHICLE SECURITY ALARM
The Vehicle Security Alarm monitors the vehicle doors
and ignition for unauthorized operation. When the Vehicle
Security Alarm is activated, interior switches for
door locks are disabled. The system provides both audible
and visible signals for the first three minutes the
horn will sound and the headlights will turn on, the park
lamps and/or turn signals will flash and Vehicle Security
Light will flash repeatedly. For an additional 15 minutes
only, the headlights will turn on, the park lamps and/or
turn signals, and Vehicle Security Light will flash.

its common sense. its an emergency key, not a regular key. theres no chip in it. the alarm shouldnt go off so long as the key fob is within range of the truck, or the alarm should go off as soon as the key is inserted into the ignition. you can start the truck with a dead key fob. how are you screwed?

OK, I think you are correct, if the battery is dead in the fob you can still insert it and turn to start/run and the alarm should go off.

I still don't see the logic in having the key to unlock the truck but have the alarm start sounding when you use it. When I first got my truck, I used the key to unlock it and there was a woman with a baby in a stroller on the sidewalk in front of my parking place. The horn scared the pee out me and her and the kid too.

Won't be using that emergency key except in an emergency for sure.

so you dont have to carry two massive keys in your pocket....or a fob and a key.

I saw at Home Depot that they have key fobs and program them about $70.

I didn't ask if they work with RAM.

true true,

but that shouldn't count. that's aftermarket and we are complaining about OEM features on our trucks.
