In the process of figuring out whether I have a bad lifter, discussed in this thread:

Decided to cut open my FE2 from my last OC about 1 month ago. 10k miles on the oci. Pardon my crudeness, I dont hav a fancy tool, so the hacksaw went to work:

I should have sawn it closer to the top.

Filter media, it is potted into the top and bottom cap:

Had to peel the top and bottom from the media:

ADB:

And now, the stretched media:

There are some small metal flecks, but some are from me hacksawing it. Still there is some metal in the folds.

The lifter issue is caused by:

3. Possibly the MDS - use Tow/Haul or delete it.
You do realize the lifters actually get more oil, when the trucks in 4 cylinder mode. They use oil pressure to push in the pins in the lifter to disengage them. The earlier pre-vvt engines have mds and don't have anywhere near the lifter/cam issues as the later VVT engines have. The cam/lifter lubrication issues became an issue when they redesigned the block for VVT and moved the cam farther from the crank, and stuck the VVT oil passage under the cam, which blocks alot of the crank splash to the cam lobes and lifter roller. The cam lobes and lifter rollers are strictly lubricated by oil flung off the crankshaft. Spend 16 minutes and watch this complete video.

While you're at it,spend 13 minutes and watch this video on the hemi's oiling issues and you'll start to see how the engine has some serious oiling issues.

Thanks for posting. About all we can tell from can cuts is whether the media failed, and this appears to be stoutly built.
But boy, is that media permeated. Would be interesting to assess at what point (mileage) it clogs enough to pop the bypass valve.

I feel much safer changing the filter with the oil ever OCI 5k.

I changed my oil religiously according to the oci, except when I first got the truck at 28600 mi. The Honda dealership where I bought it had a 5k interval sticker on the windshield.

Penzoil platinum 5w-20 for several changes, then went to PP5w-30 ever since. Been using the larger filter XG2 since about 100k, with the FE2 for my last 3 or 4 changes.

Made it to 201,000.

From here on I will do more frequent changes, possibly even some Redline, if my wallet permits.

Just got the waterpump off, gonna stop there. I got interrupted and mixed up a few of the w/p bolts. Ed luck at its finest......lol.

Before you go any farther Ed,stick the water pump back on,and figure out the bolt placement if you can.Easier to figure them out now, then when you're putting it back together. A cardbord box, with the outline of the waterpump on it,with holes punched in the box to match the holes in the waterpump, then slide the bolts into their proper holes in the cardboard is good for keeping them in order

Sometimes watching a YouTube video the bolt lengths are pointed out. I have also done what Wild One has stated and traced an outline of the pump and placed the outgoing bolts into the corresponding holes on the cardboard template

A little story on a major overhaul( on a MF 100hp tractor rear end.
Fellow is passed on now, He was changing a rear axle bearing, so off with the tires , with fluid and weights, to get the quill off, lots of 5/8" bolts of different lengths.

They where all tossed into a 5 gallon bucket.
New bearing installed, every lifted back up and bolts started,
Story is they where all tighten down with a long breaker bar, one took more pressure to get the last 1\4inch .
You know what happened, it broke the rear end casting out at the bearing race.

A $300 job turned into a new $7000 rear end housing because of not checking bolts.

I think AMC's were one of the worst, they had about 8 bolts holding the water pump and timing cover on,and i think they were 9 differant lengths, :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh::Big Laugh:

From the early to later 70's AMC's were a hodgepod of parts from Dodge / Ford and GM,so they were a bit differant, lol
You got that right. It felt like a Cuban car…..got a part, we’ll make it fit. It was easy to keep it on the road though. And some Arco graphite

Anyone remember the Pacer?

Gives new meaning to the word, " fugly"....
The neighbours had one with a 304 in it,it was surprisingly peppy, but you'd sweat off several pounds in it,on a hot/sunny day :Big Laugh: A/C in cars back in the 70's wasn't all that common up here, and man that thing needed A/C in the summer:rolleyes:

My friends mom was a mail carrier, and she had an AMC Spirit, she ran the crap out of that car.

My brother dropped a 302 into a Pinto hatchback he had. I think he said the driveshaft ended up about 6" long.....lol. That car would move.

A shirttail relative dropped a 327 into an early 71 Pinto when we were kids, the surprising thing is the cars still around and running our local airport track circuit, with the same 327 he dropped in it back in the late 70's.It had a ring and bearing job a few years ago,but it's still the same 327/turbo 350 combo he stuck in it when we were kids :waytogo:
