Was looking for a means to get a front hitch to allow putting bikes up front, tow a teardrop trailer, keep the tonneau closed for weather protected storage, still be able to use my rambox, put a canoe on the cab and finally - keep the factory tow hooks. For the 1500 model I have, the tow hooks need to be removed to mount aftermarket front hitches unless you do a modication. Rather than a complete fab I ended up modifying a standard front mounted hitch Reese 65062. I purchased the hitch new in sep-24 and it was $186, for some ridiculus reason I now (2 months later) it is $220. The Reese hitch is already setup to mount in front but the tow hooks need to be removed for the original fit, didn't really like that idea.

The hitch is installed by 4 bolts - the front two make use of the existing tow hook mounting and the rear get mounted to the frame. I basically just cut off the 2 front ears/flanges of the hitch and then welded them so they were level with the top of the hitch's square tube member (of course you need to maintain the same distance side to side). This dropped the ears down about an inch (can't recall the exact drop). A couple of gussets were welded on as well and also cut off those integrated loops that would have been the tow hook replacements.

The factory tow hooks come with a flanged rubber bushing that has a removable metal inner bushing which I removed. I then cut off one of the rubber flanges.

I found a 23/32" OD, 0.508" ID, 1" long galvanized spacer to replace the longer metal bushing I removed. When the hooks are reinstalled, the rubber bushing's flanged side remains between the tow hook and frame which maintains the original spacing. The hitch is then bolted to the tow hook - the original factory bolts are more than long enough to take up the additional hitch ear thickness.

The hitch's rear bolts need to be installed per the instructions, real simple with a step drill and the hardware they supply. I did not trim the front fascia. Only thing now (of course) is the clearance is reduced. It is actually pretty easy to put on/off, the only issue the weight and awkwardness aligning it. For now I leave it off unless I have a trip planned.

Can you post a pic without the bike rack. I’m thinking about putting one on.

I might be missing something, but seems like a lot of work, just buy a front hitch with the hooks incorporated. that is what i did, 1 hour install, removed the OEM tow hooks, installed the aftermarket front tow hitch with tow hooks included and bolted it up using the OEM bolts and bolt holes. Like I noted with a friend helping about an hour. I think it was one 18m box end wrench was all that was needed.
what am I missing?

Some people enjoy DIY projects.

I would be interested in a link to the item you installed, I have too many projects or I'm lazy or...

How about a closeup picture of your famous "aftermarket front tow hitch with tow hooks included"?

@rdecae81 The reason was I would have been left with the 2 slots in the bumper unfilled so I would have needed to put blank plates in there. This was not a big, long project at all. The cutting/welding/painting was maybe an hour spread out of a couple of days. As far as the mounting of the hitch, it is exactly per the hitch instructions. You use the existing 2 holes for the towhooks but must drill into the frame (at least for the hitches that fit my truck) for the rear two mounts. Plus keeping the original hooks allows me to easy tie downs for the roof mounted canoe rather than going under the truck to access the loops. All in all works fine for me.

i went to etrailer.com. entered my vehicle 2018 ram 2500 entered front receiver, I think every option had the tow hooks included? if not I deliberately choose an option that included the tow hooks. I cannot weld, and certainly appreciate those who can and have the tools already purchased, so I just went to etrailer.com and bought an all-encompassing solution.

@rdecae81 We are dealing with apples and oranges, the 2500 tow hook mounting and hence hitch mounting options are completely different. For the 1500 that I have options are less, either live with the hooks gone or come up with a mod.

Modified thread title and original paragrapgh to include 1500 for clarity.

so sorry I missed that, I did not know the tow hooks were different. to be honest I thought the front layout was the same for the 1500, 2500, & 3500
Now that I think about it kind of makes sense, they are different.

My truck is leveled and on 35s so it's never a problem with ground clearance
Haha, exactly my next plan. The front hitch worked but is has a ripple effect. I'm planning on putting 5100s up front to level and get back the original clearance. However, when I tow the trailer the rear end sag will now make the truck nose up. With the present setup for towing the rear sag just eats into the rake so the truck is pretty level. So I am planning to put Timer Grove rear assist bags which will allow me to bring the truck level when towing (or not).

Side note: an alternate way I considered for the front hitch mod was to pick up the same 4 mounting points but cut a hole in the bumper behind the front plate and run it out from there. The only issue would have been the bikes would have been quite a bit higher up and someone could argue that they obstruct driver visibility.

A properly loaded trailer shouldnt cause too much say

Provided your hitch is at the proper height for the trailer

If you do have a lot of sag, i would look into timbrens or airbags

Mine is a factory air ride truck so mine sits level no matter the trailer load. When I ditch the air ride it'll get helper bags. I considered the same modification and have the hitch come out the gap in the bumper. I pretty much never use the hitch for anything other than a tow point but it is nice to put the bike rack in from time to time. My dad has a hitch mount snow plow that I thought about stealing for the winter month but didn't need it after all LOL

Pretty simple really, remove tow hooks, mount front hitch, attach new tow hooks to that. Basically how my winch mount works for my Warn 16,500 pound winch.
