Drove home from SoCal last night, roll up to a pump about 40 miles away from home, truck says 10 miles till E and the fuel gauge is way past E. I was actuallly a little worried, so I decided to get fuel. But what do you know, damn thing only took 25 gallons..still had 7 gallons left. I am going to start researching this, and asking for a fix at my dealer it really pissed me off last night. You can see in the pics in the “ Range” once it gets below 10 miles left it goes to “ fuel low” instead of a miles read out.

My 2500 does the same thing (and it really ****** me off too).

When on a long trip, my truck tells me I have a range of something around 525 miles when i fill up. In reality, that tank will get me approx 350 to 400 miles before getting low (< 50 miles left by EVIC). Then I barely get 25 gallons in the tank (meaning at least 7 gallons still in the tank). The actual travel is a difference of 175 to 225 miles which is not trivial. It kills me that my truck is telling me I need gas when I still have 7 gallons. Even worse, when in daily driving mode, my truck tells me I'm empty (zero miles left) and I still have 5-7 gallons in the tank. I'm surprised this amount of variance is acceptable to the FCA engineers. It would not be in my team.

I understand there is a computer flash for the 1500 that addresses this, but nothing for the 2500 unfortunately.

Sorry for my soap box, but this irritates me.

I have a 2014 with the 8 speed with a 32 gallon tank and as far as I can tell they don't even have a flash for our trucks yet because it's included in the auto park recall and as far as I can tell the earlier trucks are not included. Frustrates the **** out of me to is something that should have been fixed a long time ago.

Dealership is not going to be able to fix this to your satisfaction.

Let me ask a dumb question--how do you know you actually have a 32 gallon fuel tank? Have you ever pumped more than 25 gallons into it?

I wonder if the next time you get really low--maybe with the gas cap removed, could you jostle the truck and hear gas splashing around in the tank?

I called the dealer to see what they could confirm.... He said that only the regular cab trucks have a 28gal tank. crew/mega cabs with 6'-4" bed trucks have a 31 gal tank, 8'-0" beds have a 32 gal tank. Also confirmed in the Ram catalog I just downloaded, so it seems something is definitely wacky. I also have been down to low fuel and could only put 25 gal diesel in.

If I was experiencing this perceived shortage of fuel tank capacity, I would run my tank down to where the gauges and EVIC said it was almost empty, and with a gas can containing a gallon of gas on hand, try to run the tank down to nothing. Only way to make sure you have a 32 gallon tank.

If you can still drive for miles and miles you've just proven you have a 32 gallon tank. If you run out of gas, you have the spare gallon on hand to put in the tank and get to a gas station. Whereupon, you should be able to pump about 30 gallons into your tank.

It’s because they use the same unit in the 32g tank as the 26g tank. I don’t know yet how it works, was going to dive into it today but got slammed at work

Here's a video showing a guy who took his truck to the dealer and had the system flashed to fix the tank issue. So it appears there is a fix available. But I called my dealer and they have no record of the update or know anything about it. Ugh!

Pretty sure they just upgrade the tank and don't change anything else. My 2013 with 32 gallon tank shows empty, light on, remote start won't work at 26 gallons. But sometimes I will drive it to work and back even when light is on and can get a little over 27 gallons in. Wife had a Dodge caravan that showed empty with 5 gallons left in tank and my Dodge Durango shows empty with around 5 gallons left. Is odd, but is what it is.

7 gallons at 15 miles to the gallon is 105 miles... when towing or going long distances... that adds up fast, at 52k they can get it right. I had the flash done, it seemed to work, but I noticed it reverted back to being incorrect.

I have the same problem with my truck. The service idiot at Reno dodge told me to carry a gas can and run it out, use the gas can to refill and then refill the tank. I did that and between the 5 gallon can and the station refill I was still short 7 gal. I report that to the service idiot and he responded that was a reserve in the tank to keep the fuel pump submerged. Yet a couple of people on another forum have posted pics of the fuel pump showing that they put 30 gallons in their 1500 to fill up their 32 gallon tank.

I always heard that there was 8 percent reserve on top of what the tank was listed at. I don't know all I know is fill in up and 25- 26 gallons in a tank is stupid. My 2500 is 3 months old and I noticed it on the first tank. Stupid. I'm do for my first oil change and sitting on empty .I ought to make them drop the tank and weigh the sob and let them still try to tell me there is not a problem

I tinkered with the setting a couple days ago, my dash fuel gauge suddenly showed I’d lost about half a tank.

Took a few minutes to look into it today and for SOME reason, the fuel level was set to 287 Liters.

I’d “reset” it to 28 gallons, I thought, ‘cause I couldn’t figure out how to get the 31 gallon/117 Liter setting to stick.

Did it today, now the gas gauge shows full. Which it is.

Love this OBDlink MX gadget.
