I'm going to be changing the gear lube soon in my diff and had a question about the fill level. There is a line on the diff that indicates the proper fill level. As I recall, the specification says it can be +/- 1/4" from the line. The line is a 1/4" from the bottom of the fill hole. Does this mean you can fill up to the hole till it runs out like in the olden days?

btw will be using 75-90 Amsoil Severe Gear lube.

Book says .25", +/- .25", below the fill hole. Must be a reason for that. I read somewhere the level keeps oil from standing in axle tubes since the bearings on the wheel end don't need lube. Whoever said that could be speaking with forked tongue.

Just fill to fill hole. 1/4" below filling hole +- 0.25" puts max fill at fill hole. As long as you are less than 0.5" below the hole you are in spec on low end. Don't over think it.

When I pulled the plug on mine the first time oil ran out. Just a little. That tells me what the factory does.

x2.... same here. Just a small drop though, nothing crazy.

On this topic, approx how much goes in front and rear diff so you buy enough oil?
Might be listed somewhere, I just haven’t looked.

If I remember correctly it's 2.5 quarts for the front & 4 quarts for the rear. Or 4.75 pints & 7.65 pints. On my rear it didn't take the full 4 quarts though. Seems like I only got about 3.5 in there before it started coming out the fill hole.

Most importantly is to be on the level - makes over filling all but an impossibility :)

Well, I guess if you put more oil in and hurry up and jamb the plug in, you could technically over fill it. But who would do that?

Buy 7 quarts to do both the front and rear.

I just did mine yesterday. 3qts could use a tad more. So yeah buy 4 lol. It’s within the limits but I like it right under the fill hole.
