Sorry to add insult to injury - but "log headers"?

Crappy situation that you got them, hopefully Gibson is willing to do a buy back for you. Who did you buy them from? Sometimes vendors will also do a buyback for non-performance.

Yeah, but at first I was giving them the benefit of doubt. I kind of bought in to their theory on these to build better low in torque. The log itself is huge, 3.5/4" oval and would keep better back pressure than a set of long tube but flow a little better than a set of shorties and keep me where I want to be in the lower/mid range torque/power. I think whats killing them is there not flowing and holding too much back pressure and heat in them. Its just too rough on the inside of the logs to flow with the way everything is welded together. The proof to this is there cooking the coating off of them in just over a week and my engine temp has climbed back up even with the 180 t-stat. I plan on do a lift after the first of the year and need a boost in torque to help motivate a set of 39/40" tires and not have to be standing in the throttle waste deep to keep it moving. I've got some more mods on the motor in the works, TB, Springs, Cam, Tuner and Intake, just the headers where the next step in the mod chain. I may scape the whole mod idea and keep ole grey as my daily driver and search out a 24V P7100 for my toy.

We ocassionally have discouraging moments when modding our trucks especially with our beloved 03's, it's just a matter of stepping back and refocusing on our goals. Hang in there shipmate...

Well finally got word from gibson that their not going to do anything with the logs. They say the coating looks normal to them and that the heat and performance is due to not having a tuner on it yet. All sounds like BS to me but oh-well. Guessing I'm going order my tuner next week and start trying to get my valve springs and push rods together to make that swap. Anyone got a valve spring compressor for sale?

I don't know a single person yet that has shown any performance benefit from those log "headers". Gibson is like many other manufacturers that claim a lot more than their products actually produce, and that is why we don't offer them. The tuner is going to be a big help in general, but I would consider swapping those logs out for something that actually makes power. If you set everything up correctly between headers, cam, and converter, you wont have any worries about low end tq loss. Longtubes are the only way to go IMO when it comes to making big power.

Fl8x sucks that they wont work with you on these. Try the tuner like your thinking but I would put up a feeler add on creigslist and try selling them.

hemi450hp, what do you think is the best low end torque header, still benefits us up top, but passes emissions and state inspections when it comes time to sell?

I've been using these logs on my hemi swapped Dakota since June as well. I can't say if they are good or not since I'm already 120hp over what I was making before lol.

Did you notice any gain that you can attribute to the logs since you got the tuner? Or did you change the whole setup?

I am SO with you on the bolt placement problem, holy crap it's hard to torque these. I had a pain putting them on the first time, took forever. And that was with the engine on a stand! No room for a ratchet. I've been thinking of putting stock manifolds on but I don't know. I want to try pacesetters, but I don't know how well they will fit...

Reviving this thread because it comes up when doing a search online and gives some misleading information on the Gibson shortie headers, so I thought I'd update it for accuracy.
I had the Gibson shorties installed on Friday (mating them up to my previously installed Gibson SS Super Truck Cat-back system), no pictures because you really can't see anything.
I got exactly what I was expecting and a little more, an even deeper rumble and a little gain in torque on the bottom end (didn't expect it to enhance the sound of the cam hitting, but it did that too?).
My truck runs like a scalded dog when you give it WOT, but at a light or just cruising at low speeds, around 1,500-2,000 rpm's if you don't give it just the right amount of gas it almost felt like there was slight stumble trying to maintain torque in lower power band?
That's completely gone now, nice smooth torque gain through the power band!
I'm happy with the Gibson shorties.
Keep in mind, headers are just a piece of the larger picture homogenized with other performance goodies finalized with a performance tune.
