Here is the thought. I was to pass smog legally but I also love the no cats sound.

I am pulling my heads to do my cam so I am thinking why not guy my stock cats and add in a big cat before my muffler to pass smog. Then after smog I swap in a straight pipe in place of the cat.

Do you guys think that would pass?

Why not pick up AFE's non catted Y pipe, and keep everything stock to pass smog, then swap the whole Y pipe out afterwards. You get a much better flowing Y pipe with the AFE Y.

What would he see that is modified if I drill out the inside and bolt them back up?

I guess he would see the extra cat in the exhaust and wonder why. :)

High flow cats? Get better flow and pass smog. I am glad they just hook you up the the computer and see if anything pops up. That is in Oregon anyways.

Not in CA. High flow cats don’t have a carb #. I wish :)

I plan to eventually purchase a used OEM Y-pipe, hack it up by adding a mid flange to bolt-on less converters.

Don’t have smog but it would make undercarriage transmission maintenance easier in the future.

Just ran into a MF bolt-on assembly for $800

CA doesn't smog vehicles 1996 and newer. Unless it sounds modified, they do a simple engine check and that's it. They no longer test smog, do you know why? Because smog checks create smog, lol. CA is so stupid. I watched them smog my 2010 truck and my 2009 rav 4, the "smog check" took less then 2 minutes. In fact, I thought he was just moving the vehicle to a parking spot, I was eating lunch in a resturant across the street, but him moving my truck to the parking spot WAS the smog check, lol.

not sure if you're being facetious but any vehicle in California 1976 and newer require smog tests. exemptions are pre 1997 diesel and 4 year or newer (some up to 6 years). I'm assuming your smog guy is on the lenient side if takes him 2 minutes to smog a car. my 2009 Pontiac G8 GT took a good 20 minutes.

now if there's a change in the smog laws in CA that I'm not aware of, please let me know. I'd love not to smog my truck.

For the price of that age y-pipe I can get a used OEM one and make it cat less myself lol. Good idea though.

My last try’s I smog was quick, 10min max because he had to check my numbers for the AFE intake and the JBA headers.

from 1975 to 1996 they hook the vehicle up to a smog check machine, 1996 and never they just do a quick visual inspection.

thanks. The smog shop I use is known to be reputable and respected. not sure why if this publication is dated march 2009 he would do the tail pipe in 2014 and 2015 when I got my car and truck smogged. Next time I'm there I'll have to ask.

sorry for the thread jack, OP

It is f'n stupid what this state gets away with, smog tests you pay for and don't get. It was supposed to lower the cost, but the state forced smog centers to buy expensive equipment that electronically registers the smog check with dmv. So you don't get a smog check at all but have to pay extra for the priviledge of not getting a smog check that they register with the dmv. Kind of like the recycling here, they have no more capabilities to recycle plastic, so they charge you for plastic when you buy it but now dump it in the landfill. Seams like nobody cares anymore. The state programs are broke, but they don't care they force residents to pay extortion for their communism to continue meanwhile it is a scam they are selling. Smog checks great for the environment, woohoo, recyling great for protecting resources woohoo, sadly neither program does what it supposed to do, all it does is take your money and put it in their pocket. My mechanic admitted, all they are required to do is check and make sure there isn't a check engine light, and we have to pay 50 bucls for that? It's a joke man.

I don't even want to join in on the hypocrisy that is California. I'm counting the days till I can sell and retire to a reasonable state. but those seem to be dwindling as well.

anyway, I can only hope that if they eventually delete the visual inspection, I could actually go long tube headers and high flow cats.

no point putting a cat back by the muffler. if you had to do a tail pipe test it would likely fail. the cats are placed as close to the engine as possible because they require heat to do their job. the farther back they are the less they are likely to do. as long as they rely on the computer test and the computer says all is ok then it should be fine but will likely need one of them o2 sensor adapter things to filter the readings to the after cat o2 sensor or maybe some resisters tied into the wire to the o2 sensor so the computer thinks the cat is still there and working
that was how it was for vehicles before we ditched e tests here. they would only tailpipe test if the car computer would not talk to their test machine like on my sisters car. last 2 times it had to be tailpipe tested and it is a 06 but it is also a cheap Hyundai.
