Alright guys,

First post here so I apologize if this is in the wrong area.

Here is my issue. I currently have the dreaded stock exhaust manifold leak that I’ve read is common in the 13 Ram 1500. I’m sure my warranty would cover it but I’m not sure that I care as I only have 10k miles left on warranty. I want an aggressive sounding truck but I don’t want it to be abnoxious. Super loud is not for me personally.

My question is how do you guys feel about long headers (thinking BBK Psrfomance) and an aftermarket muffler (thinking Flowmaster outlaw) with the stock exhaust tubing? Or am I better off just doing all the exhaust tubing? Currently all I have modded under the hood is the K&N cold air intake, if I did what I mentioned above I’m assuming I’d need to tune it for all the new air flow???

Any thoughts, ideas, feedback are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JD

If you go long tube headers you will have to replace your y-pipe anyway so that will be half your exhaust replaced. you can get away with keeping the catback and you can do a muffler swap. you will need to tune for the long tube headers. Are you going catted or non catted? For the headers I would rather see you go Stainless works or Kooks for the better build quality as well as performance. These 2 brands will last the test of time much better! For a muffler or catback we have a ton of options and we can narrow that down by seeing if you want a direct bolt in set up or not.

Message me and we can go over some options and go into depth on some other options.

i have the mufflex direct replacement 18” magnaflow on my truck with long tubes and no cats. This crap has been in my carven tips lately. Pretty sure I’m blowing the insides out of the muffler. Ever seen this? Debating on switching to the Borla pro xs to get rid of the drone. Message me Nick if you don’t mind.

I was running long tubes with no cats and a carven exhaust. Sounded loud af! I went to a borla and oh lawd, music to my ears and tons of compliments. I also ran a Maggie with the long tubes but wasn’t a fan. Believe it was the 14” magnaflow. Borla sounds good on these trucks but that’s just my .02

I've gotten so used to the carven that I don't think I'd be happy with the truck quieter. I know my neighbors hate me if I start it before 8am

I loved the carven competitor until I got long tubes. On a stock exhaust it sounded sick imo but once I went longtubes and no cats it was a bit too much. I’m just getting old lol.

Another option would be to get a set of long tube ARH. They are expensive but I believe they are the best headers out there as far as fit and finish is concerned. You can have them powder coated to reduce heat and keep them looking good. Most people will recommend them as the "top tier" header of any that is available. Moe's Performance, a preferred vendor on this site, sells them along with supporting exhaust systems.

BBK only offers shorty headers for these trucks, and they are their quality has gone downhill over the past few years. JBA makes a good budget longtube header for these trucks, but they are only offered without cats. That isnt necessarily a bad thing though unless you live in an area with strict emissions.

ARH is the best header available for these trucks IMO, and is offered with or without high flow cats. They were the first company to offer a longtube header for these trucks, and the only that offers a specific Y-pipe for the 5/6 and 8sp trucks to ensure the best fitment for each application. ARH is what I run on my own trucks.

As for the rest of the exhaust, you have 100s of options here. The bolt on muffler kits from Carven and Mufflex are a great option that wont break the bank. The Carven Competitor kit gets a little too rowdy for me with longtues, but the Progressive is a nice option. All the Mufflex kits sound good to me with headers because they use a Magnaflow muffler which has more of a deep/smooth tone to it. Cant go wrong with the Borla ProXS either. It is at he top of my list as far a a deep and smooth tone that isnt overpowering.

Matt, how do you feel about the Corsa sport exhaust?

I did not like Corsa on these trucks. It has a gurgling type sound almost like the tips are under water. I put it on my truck, and took it right back off an hour later. My 2 favorite catback kits for these trucks are Borla and ARH. Both have a deep and smooth tone that are not overpowering while cruising. Very comfortable in the cab, but still aggressive when you get in the throttle.

@Jeremiah DeVries :welcome: to Ramforum. It was mentioned above by Nick, but I will reiterate. In addition to those LT headers you will need a custom tune too (I use Hemifever's 93 on a Diablo Trinity T2). As for powerful sounding, but not obnoxious, I run ARH Headers (1 3/4) with high flow CATs (at Matt's recommendation), I ceramic coated them as @Pull Ya suggested, and matched the headers to my existing Magnaflow Cat-back exhaust (single exit). I run a 3" pipe from the Y-pipe back. No cabin drone, insanely powerful and throaty when I smash the pedal on the right. ARH has fantastic fitment. I went ahead and put on Remflex gaskets and Stage 8 fasteners, but they are not required. Headers, the tune, the exhaust... this is not cheap but will pay HUGE dividends in your truck's performance and your enjoyment. That much is guaranteed!
