It's the 3.42 gear that are the problem!! I re geared to 4.10's and it is like driving a completely different truck. Still gets great fuel mileage and will tow like a freight Train!!!

Did u have it in tow haul mode? You could delete and tune it if that's an option. I have a 13 Laramie with some *missing emissions* parts and tuning for the 68 trans that increases trans pressure to 250. I also added a billet ultra low stall convertor, valve body and flexplate. The 3:42 gears and 35s don't help for towing heavy that's for sure! I pull a 9k Dry weight RV and my trans will downshift as needed. They also say don't tow heavy in 6th gear but on a flat highway I will.

I have the 2016 Tradesman 6.7 Cummins with now 48000 miles on it. The truck came with A6 68 RFE trans. Once a week I load 1600 gallons of water in a tank on a 4000 lb trailer and haul it 3 miles to my place and the last 500 feet is a 40 % slope. I have to slip it into 4WD for the hill but there is nothing this beast won't haul! It is all dirt road so I only go up to 40 mph but with a max trailer weight of 17,010 like the sheet says, there is no problem pulling this 17,500 load....stopping it is another thing though. I just go slow. Yes tow mode and full exhaust brake. On the highway with a side x side in the box and 3000# of boat on the back anytime I want to pass, grade or no grade just push the accelerator and you are up from 75 to 90 in seconds!! Will only get 12.5 mpg but it only gets 13 empty.

I had this exact issues with my previous truck, a 2017 2500, 3.42, CTD, 68RFE. Turns out there is a firmware update for the pedal, they had forgotten to update mine, and it wouldn't downshift to pass when I kicked it. Once they updated the firmware it accelerated a LOT harder. I upgraded the truck because I went to an 18k 5th though. AS69 trans, very different shifting, much better on hills. Has a lot more trans cooling.

But, you should be able to pull 15k uphill, just have them check the accelerator sensor firmware. Also, if you don't have airbags in the rear, you should.

Awesome. I’ll ask for the update.

Not doing airbags. I don’t haul often enough to justify the cost. I’m also not so sure how they would hold up to the farm!

You can try sumo springs instead of air bags. They're maintenance free, basically a progressive spring that replaces your bumper stop.

So typically with the 6.7, 6 speed all you should get is more turbo spool. The engine is designed for max torque around 1850-1950 RPMs. Max torque is what gets it done, more RPMs out of that Cummins would give you less torque. It was pulling in the power band. My 6.7 rarely downshifts on hills, normally just here the turbo spool up.

It was more than just shifting, the sensor wasn't dumping enough fuel in either. And the engine speed doesn't help but the lower gearing definitely does. Especially with the RFE. That was one of my biggest complaints relative to the AS69. Cost is a big leap, but low gears on the 69 are much different.

That being said the RFE with the sensor update pulled a 12k trailer without issue. And it launched from stop much better as well. It felt like a non-standard code version, since it was so sluggish. It was a dealer demo when I bought it, but it may have just been a reset required as well. After updating it pulled so hard the 20" tires would squirm if I pushed it too hard.
