Do these things still have a shifter cable & shift lever on the trans ?? I thought it was all electronic now.

Anyway.......Was out driving in the snow today, and when I get home and try to back in to my driveway, the truck will not drop into reverse. The shifter didn't feel right either, as in it has some resistance, but not enough to say I had to force it in gear.

Ok, dealership is just up the road, so I drive there...and of course, they are closed due to the snow.

So I drive back home, and this time it will drop in reverse, but only after a long pause. It will also go into neutral, reverse & drive, but not park. After several tries, and with some effort, the shifter goes into park, but the trans is still in reverse.

I then make the mistake of turning the engine off. Now, I have a truck who's ignition circuit & transmission thinks it is in reverse, but the shifter is in park, and won't come out no matter what I do. If I put the key in the run position, the backup camera comes on, which is why I say it still thinks it is in reverse.

Then I remember the little plug by the shifter...so I pop it out, get the shift lever in neutral, and now I can start the engine. Now, it goes into park ok at the shifter & the trans also goes into park, but still will not let me start the engine.

After fiddling with it for 20 min or so, I finally can start the engine without having to pop the plug to bypass the shifter interlock to put it in neutral.

So, what the heck is going on here ????? With the trans out in my jeep, this is my only transportation, and I ain't feelin' the reliability right now.

Any ideas ?????

Try putting it in 4wd and tow haul, maybe it will get you out anyway. If not someone will have to push.

I was in 4wd auto when it 1st acted up.......and 4wd or 2wd did not matter

Not stuck anywhere, it's parked in the driveway, but not sure I want to drive it to work tomorrow and risk it getting me stuck there, or somewhere between.

BTW, this truck only has 11,400 miles or so on it. Still smells new even.

I think it has a shifter cable. Did you try looking under the truck? I had a f-150 the the bracket that kept the cable stable came loose and I had all kinds of issues like that.

Yes there is still a shift cable on your truck. It's extremely likely it got packed with snow/ice and is binding up. I've seen it happen a fair number of times. Don't force it to much if it's sticking, you'll snap the cable.

I had the same thing happen to me, I started off kinda hard to put in gear and then it was rreally hard to change any gears.

After a day of doing it, it just went away. and havent had an issue since..

Yeah, I know....and I read thru that other article just before I left the house yesterday.

It seems to be working now, but I am gonna get the dealer to check it out today.

Just curious, was this normal driving in the snow, or some off road hitting the slush puddles and snow piles fun type driving? If this happens just commuting around town that is a problem. Also, does your truck have skid plates? If not, I wonder if that would have made a difference?

might actually make it worse. mine got completely packed with rock hard ice then it just kept building up and up to the point there was probably a few hundred pounds of ice just hanging out

Yes on skid plates....yes on normal driving......I have jeeps for offroading.

Dealer claims there is no shift cable,, and they ordered a new shifter for it...say it has an intermittent problem
