Hi all, hopefully I am asking in the correct forum. I have a 2021 Laramie 1500. Both of my key fobs work as they should. When I depart my truck from the driver side and press the small black button on the exterior handle, the doors lock as they should. When I grab the handle, the doors unlock, just as the should.

However, when I try either the lock/unlock function on the passenger side, it does not work for either option.

I did verify in the settings that it is indeed selected in service. I'm not overly knowledgeable in how to diagnosis the issue beyond this. My best guess at a starting point is to remove the handle from the driver side and install it on the passenger side. If this works, that would be a clear indicator a sensor on the handle is bad and I need a new handle. Does this seem like a logical starting point in diagnosing the issue?

Thanks,
Chris

A scan tool would help in this situation because you would be able to see if any DTC's have been set in the BCM or any of the door modules. Also, with a proper scan tool you would be able to operation of the door switches in the inputs and outputs of the BCM and door modules.

Being able to see that information would keep you from wasting money and throwing parts at it.

Thank you for the very quick response! Is this the type of scan tool you are referring to? (Amazon link - please let me know if posting links here is not okay)

Sorry I didn't see your response sooner. I'm almost certain that code reader will not do what I am referring to. The type of scan tool I am referring to is one that only some shops have. These aren't cheap pieces of equipment. The main scan tool I use daily besides the WiTech cost me about $8800 and I got a super deal when I bought it. Looking back I would have spent my money somewhere else but I have a soft spot for this certain tool company.

I also have an Autel Maxisys MS906 TS that I picked up used and I think it will do what you need.

Where is the FOB in both situations? Maybe a proximity issue? as weird as that sounds.

I noticed my Jeep Gladiator only liked me grabbing the handle with my left hand - go figure. I never looked into it much, I just figured I was hitting the sensor a certain way with my left hand or the key was in a better position.

I keep the FOB in my left pocket or left-side of cargo shorts. I have about a 98% success rate while swiping with my left hand versus much less with my right.

Okay, so, not something the average Joe would have. Seems like I either need to take it to a Ram dealer and have them run the test - or be glad the drivers side works and deal with it.

I've tried it with both FOBs in each front pocket and even outside of my pockets in my free hand.

You don’t need any of that crazy expensive equipment.
You can diagnose anything the dealer level scan tool can with alfaobd or JScan app, vlinker MC+ OBD Bluetooth interface, and a $15 security gateway bypass from Amazon.

Update: I tried switching the handles between the passenger and driver door as a free easy starting point. The drivers door opens with each handle and the passenger side does not lock/unlock with either handle. So, handle/sensor should be ruled out.

I purchased the vLinker and SGW and hooked them up and connected to Jscan. I verified that it said "active" but the passenger door still does not lock/unlock.

Do I need to locate my key fob within the app and try something with that?

Thanks guys - and sorry I am not the best at understanding what may be common knowledge to some of you.

What faults show up if you do the advanced scan?

I will add that I thought about the handle for the tailgate. So I locked the doors and tried opening the tailgate and it opened as well.

So, tailgate and drivers door work as they should. Passenger door passive entry does not work at all.

I'll take another look tomorrow. I don't think there were any faults. But it was my first time using a vlinker and I messed with it for about an hour before coming to work.

I know you said "both of my key fobs work as they should", but just wanted to ask...when you unlock from the key fob, do all doors unlock or just the driver's side?

I would pull back the rubber cover if you can on the wiring harness that is by the door hinges,
you could have a broken wire in there, although it's usally the drivers side as that gets used more.
you would have to take of the door panel I suppose, to figure out which wires are which
I have never had the handles off any of these, so don't know what plugs and such are on the handles , a wiring schematic / diagram would be handy
I may have missed it, does the door lock with the inside switch on that door? if not , then you have bad switch/ wires in that door.
nothing to do with the fobs.

You can set the computer to only unlock one door or all doors, so I would double check that again to make sure it set correct, I know you said you did that , but you could tell on the other doors if you have 4 doors.

Could be the truck isn’t recognizing there is a FOB in close proximity on the right side. Try placing the FOB against the side glass when you grab the door handle. Kinda like placing the FOB against the glass when you close the door to keep the horn from honking 3 times…….only in reverse??

As an aside, someone mentioned that the passive unlock only worked with one hand. I had that experience until I found that it was sensitive to which pocket I had the FOB in. In my left pocket which I carry change (coins) it would not work!
