So this morning I started up my truck and heard the infamous ticking sound that the Hemis are supposedly notorious for. I took it to my local mechanic to see if they could take a look at it. They said that because the noise only happens at cold start, that they would need to keep the truck for at least a few hours so that they could cold start it and hear the noise for themselves. Well, after I got home from work, I decided to do a little "self diagnosis" and low and behold, the issue is a broken exhaust manifold heat shield bolt on the passenger side. Thankfully, this seems to be the issue instead of the more notorious hemi ticking sound, which is due to the lifters if I'm not mistaken. Those of you who have had to get an exhaust manifold bolt replaced and didn't have the tools or skills to do it yourselves, how much did it cost you? I'd just like to know ahead of time so that I'm not paying more than what I should. I'm taking my truck back to the mechanic shop tomorrow morning.

that is good news, when compared to the other thing.
For sure. The last thing I need is to pay someone to take apart my engine. However I have heard that using Redline motor oil helps to quiet the ticking sound down because it has such a high moly content.

So a little update on the situation. Apparently the problem is much worse than a simple broken bolt. I took it to a mechanic that I've gone to for years for regular maintenance so I do trust them and they've determined that the real cause is a bad exhaust manifold that's causing an exhaust leak and for one of the bolts to become sheared off. I'm getting a new exhaust manifold installed today, so I'm looking at around $700 for the repair with labor being 75% of that price.

This problem is extremely common and what happens is the manifolds warp over time which in turn shears the bolt heads off. Your new manifolds will have the exact same issue eventually. The better thing to do is have your mechanic check how warped it is and just sand it flat on a belt sander.

The manifold won’t warp any further after that and you shouldn’t have manifold bolt issues again.

Thanks. If anything, what I might do is just start saving up for headers once this particular issue is resolved at least for the time being.

how long can you go with the cold start exhaust manifold leak before damaging the cylinder head ? I have gone south for the winter and would like to have my regular repair shop do the repair when I get back in may.
