I have a 4.7 and have been quite happy with it. There are several things you can do to get the performance up, and still have better mpg's than the 5.9. A programmer, cold air intake, exhaust, headers, gears, cam...you'll be good to go.

Welcome to rf man! And I got the 02 with the 5.9 and just like everyone else it's a great truck. Looks great, runs awesome, but I get 10.2 no matter what I do. Either truck is a good choice your personal preference is the biggest factor.

Well welcome! Ill chime in with the 5.9 guys. I have a 98 with the 5.9 I drive the crap out of it. I travel for a living so I get to see the mileage a bunch. I can tell ya with average driving mix of country roads highway and city I average 13 to 14 depending on travel that day. I have plenty of power and tow just about whatever I need. If you do tow anything suggest the 5.9 yes the gas is a bothersome issue. But if you have a 6k trailer you won't even be worries about power. I have had almost 2.5 tons in the bed and the truck didn't care. I vote 5.9 bad has yes but many other plus sides.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the great replies. Like I said, I do admit I lean more towards the 3 gen body style rather than the 2nd. Though the 2nd gen body style is still very nice, I am leaning more towards it to purchase. I actually found another truck, 2001 3/4 ton 5.9 gas, long bed, low miles, really good price and just all around the best deal. So, everybody here seems to say the same thing about the 5.9 gas, that no matter what you do, it still gets crappy gas mileage. Seems to be around 10-12mpg to be the average. So, chip/intake/exhaust, none of that really helps either? Im not too worried about gas mileage, its a big truck so I figure its goina get crappy gas mileage no matter what, but if it can be helped out any, that's always a good thing too.
