Well I just wanted to introduce myself and say hey to everybody out there. Also, just wanted to find out some info seeing how this is the best place to ask about Dodge Rams.
Currently I own crappy Ford F250 that is getting sold ASAP. So, naturally I wanted to get a Dodge, always have wanted one. My question is which would be the safer to buy
2001 Dodge 1500 QCab 5.9L
or
2002 Dodge 1500 Qcab 4.7L
I lean more towards the 2002 because it's the 3rd gen body style which I prefer more. I've never owned either so I just wanted to hear some opinions from the people that know them best.
Thank ya

Welcome to the forum man! Honestly Ive never owned a diesel, but I think the overwhelming opinion you'll get here is to get the diesel. Yeah it's an older body style, but that motor's gonna last you a lot longer than the 4.7. The 4.7's from that generation have been know to have a head gasket problems, and a couple more that I can't remember. I'm sure more will chime in. Welcome again and good luck on the truck!!!

Fella's if he's looking a 4.7, the 5.9 is probably a Magnum not a Cummins not to mention is a 1500, no CTD option.

is it the 5.9l gas motor? or diesel? if its the diesel i would get that. but the 5.9L gas is a good motor but a gas guzzler.

Welcome to the forum. :) I had an 05 4.7 and never had any major issues with it. It is also my favorite body style of the ram.

welcome and I'd get the 4.7 less power by a little but newer technology. I had a 2002 durango with the 4.7 and had over 100k with no engine problems and it was pushed hard

Yes, sorry yeah it is gas not diesel. If I could find diesel for a decent price i'd be all over it but it's usually way more expensive than what im looking for. Anyways, my wife has a Jeep Commander with 4.7 and it's really nice. Im assuming though since its newer it might be a little different than an 02 4.7. I do like ford for different reasons, mainly because overall they are good trucks, but man mine is to much to handle. It doesn't have enough power, 5.4L is too small of an engine for that big of a truck. Don't get me wrong it can pull and tow, not compared to the 6.8 V10 though. Well the 02 4.7 does sound like the best choice, I had just heard some bad things about it but figured theres always some people that have a bad opinion. Anyways, thanks for all the quick replys. Guess thats another reason why I should pick dodge over ford. I went to a ford forum a long time ago and it took 2 or 3 days before I got 1 reply lol.

The 5.9L ( 360 ) is a great motor with late muscle car roots. Lots of performance parts in the aftermarket for it. However as previously stated it is a gas guzzler!! If performance isn't something you are looking for the the 4.7 may be a better choice.

Just make sure you check the 4.7 over real good before you buy it! and Welcome, This is the Place. You could always splurge and get an 03 with the Hemi as they are Pretty Cool!....:) I would love to mod me a 360 like Steve says cause my Hemi averages 12MPG if I'm Luckey so Gas Gussler I'm used too and if I want decent Gas Mileage i hop into the Mitsubishi.

The 4.7L is newer technology but that also brings in a chance for more issues. The 2002's are weird they have a different interior than newer 3rd gens and had a lot more steering issues than say '06 on. My dad had an '04 and it was nice but the rack and pinion was junk.
I would get the 4.7L because it is more efficient and they are pretty close on power anyway without mods. 4.7L sounds awesome with exhaust.

4.7L is 230 -310 HP depending on year probably 230-250 on the year you are looking at. A 5.9L around that year was probably about the same power from what I can tell but will likely last longer and use more gas. Go to allpar.com it has the breakdown of every motor Dodge has ever had.

Go with the 360. It's a tried and trued motor. Like the Chevy 350. When you make an engine for so long you work the kinks out.

I own an 02 4.7 she aint that great on gas, if i could go back id get a 5.9 i have high miles (166k) and have had to put a lot of money into the truck including a new head gasket like trup said. Its tough though it is a beautiful lookin rig but is very very underpowered IMO and like i said ive had a lot of problems, including one as we speak pouring out antifreeze and second time its happened and after the first got a brand new radiator. But like everyone else will say really look into it and how she runs.

I had a 2001 with a 5.9 I thought it was underpowered, I can't imagine a 4.7.

Go with the 360 or 5.7 Hemi. The 4.7 was built to replace the AMC/Jeep 4.0 L Six. Just a bit small for such a large truck.
