Oil change intervals are the biggest racket in the US... I grew up in Europe where maintenance cost is a major purchase criteria and I couldn't believe the short intervals "prescribed" here. It piqued my interest and sure enough some US manufactured cars had significantly longer intervals in Europe.

For your entertainment pull up the service intervals for Porsche in the US. All cars have at least 10k miles between oil changes, and between 24k and 80k (!!!!) miles for air filters. And this is for cars whose owners don't exactly have to stretch their dollars.

I'd say stick with the oil life indicator, it's still fairly conservative. I can do about 8k on my truck until it starts to remind me.

the air filter makes sense but it really depends on the conditions you're driving in. i have 30k km on my truck now and the filter still looks new, i'm gonna replace it on the next change anyway but i'd bet it could do another 30k

as for oil i agree it's a bit of a scam. it's even worse here with most mechanics saying 5k km or 3 months as a standard for every single vehicle no matter what the manual says

For S + G, I pulled the air filter from both my Ram and the Wifes 2014 Edge,,, Both had between 10 and 11k miles

Ram filter had a light skim of black over it,, IMHO-WAG, most likely as the RAM pulls air from the fender,,, (brake dust, etc)

Edge filter was almost spotless,,, It pulls air from the front clip...

I'm going to qualify my answer with the reasons why I do it that often. I do a lot of town driving and being from North Dakota during the winters there's a lot of coldstarts. I change mine about every 2000 miles. Now considering I only put between 6000 and 8000 miles a year, that's only 3 to 5 oil changes year.

My dealer I use offers 3 for $75 but you have to use them within 14 months. Not too big of a deal. Change it when you buy the package then every 7 months or so.

I got the same deal. $70 bucks and 3 oil changes/tire rotations.

I go off my sticker in the corner usually. As for the air filter, location varies. My filter gets dirty fast here in the desert. I'm always checkin that thing.

In the past-->Once before Winter {Dec-May} Once Before Summer {June-Nov}.

Normally 6K miles during each OCI...
If the local WM can keep stocked with Pennzoil Ultra-->I just might stick with it and do Once a year OCI. If not I will use the Pennzoil Platinum and stay with the twice a year OCI... Esp since I tow the TT in the summer months a few times...

I go by the oil monitor and usually get 10,000 + KMS and I use Amsoil Signature. I've got a S&B air filter that I check regularly. 30,000 KMS and its fine.

The dealership my dad bought his truck from threw in 2 years of free oil changes with the deal. So my dad has been going every 3k miles or so his truck. After that I told him it would be fine to go 6-7k miles between oil changes.

this is a question i have been wondering, got about 2k miles on my truck and oil life is about 85% i read the manual says do it when the EVIC says or by 10K but found that wild... although engines and the oil is getting better... just hard to believe conventional oil can go that long...

on my 2008 i went by the book and it said to change he oil at 6k, i usually did 5k just because it was usually dirty.

I got 2 years "free"oil change also, checked the small print on ownermopar.com for my contract, it pays upto $30 only for each visit, max of 4 visits in 2 year period. Worth shi*. Down the toilet it goes. Not that I was going to let the dealership change my oil anyways.

I usually change first one at approx 1.5-2k miles then every 6-7k miles with full synth.

I usually go 5000 miles with synthetic and lots of towing. But with the 4x4 oil filter access, I may up it to every 10,000. Every time I do my oil filter, I swear I'm going to go back to the Toyota dealer... then I finish and all is well again.

I got the same crap deal with mine. Seem the offer is based around their normal "$29.99" oil changes which is 5qt conventional and an oil filter. Any vehicle that takes more oil or requires synthetics has to pay the difference between the actual cost and the $30 credit.

I rather do mine anyway to know it is done right.
