Hypermiling is pretty interesting. I've been reading about it.

Semper FI, by the way. I'm about to get out myself.

Semper Fi! 25.5 years going on 30 for me. [knock on wood that I actually make it to 30]

I had to look up "Hypermilling" after you mentioned it. Some of those things I do; drafting on a semi isn't one of them.

Not mentioned in what I have read so far, but effective with the CTD, is the idea that "coasting" downhill is done with the truck in gear and the exhaust break. Supposedly, putting it in neutral actually burns more fuel than leaving it in gear for the descent. The reason is that while in gear, they computer knows the wheels are turning and halts the provision of fuel; however, in neutral, the computer continues to tell the fuel delivery system to provide fuel to maintain engine RPMs.

I just read that using the cruise controls to accelerate/decelerate in conjuction with my Exhaust Breaking is a good technique. I've been doing that for quite a while. It doesn't really seem to save me much when I'm pulling heavy though.

Haha - You're a salt dog compared to me, I knew that after I saw the stack.

I actually started doing a few things after I read about it, but you have to pick and choose what works for your situation/vehicle. For instance, I'm not drafting a semi because I like my windshield and rock chips are easy to come by.

That's some interesting info. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about diesels, my next truck will be of a 2500 variety. I actually signed up for Fuelly after seeing your sig, so we'll see how I do with this truck. I'm quite impressed, driving 100% city going easy I've seen 16.5. Towing, however is around 10 mpg but I don't do it often.

You finishing out your 20? I have a few friends taking the early retirement.

I have a bachelor's and the opportunities/pay back in the civilian world are too enticing not to pursue. I've got one company that wants to fly me out of state for an interview. I'm also looking forward to regular hours, overtime pay and weekends off lol.

I have a few friends myself taking the early retirement. I think I'm going to push towards my 20 years and see how promotion goes before I go for more. I've only got 2 years of college done, so I'm going to knock that out before I get out.

3 mpg highway or city? What did you come from/go to?

Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk

That was in the city.

I did the swap on my 2004 Z71 Tahoe. Stock 3.73 gears and went to 35" tires. Swapped to 4.56 PERFECT gearing

Don't let your 16 year old son drive the truck. My teenager consistently gets 4-5 MPG less than I do. And he swears he never mashes the skinny pedal down to the floor....:emotions34:
